The School of Social Work and Human Service (Faculty of Education and Social Work) at Thompson Rivers University Kamloops campus invites applications for a sessional lecturer to teach the lab portion of EDCS 1590 (0.1.0) Practice Foundations of Education and Community Support. This lab is delivered face to face in person on Tuesdays from 830 to 920 at the Kamloops campus. This work represents 1-credit of contact instructional work.

Course Description:
This course introduces Education Assistant and Community Support students to the practical aspects of supporting individuals with disabilities in classrooms communities and home settings. Students participate in modules that examine a variety of health care educational and communication supports for people with complex needs.
Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Utilize hardware and software that supports learning literacy and communication.
2. Utilize augmentative & alternative communication tools to support learning and communication needs.
3. Describe theoretical and ethical perspectives related to alternative forms of communication for individuals with complex communication needs.
4. Communicate simple concepts using American Sign Language (ASL).
5. Demonstrate safe lift and transfer techniques for use with children and adults with mobility impairments.
6. Practice effective personal protective measures in the delivery of personal care.
7. Describe interventions for dealing with common medical conditions (i.e. diabetes seizures anaphylaxis etc.).
8. Articulate awareness of consensual and respectful personal care practices.

THE TRU SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK AND HUMAN SERVICE
The School of Social Work and Human Service offers a wide range of academic programs to approximately 250 students on two campuses and more than 100 students through Open Learning. Programs include: Bachelor of Social Work Degree the Human Service Diploma Education Assistant and Community Support Certificate (offered at both the Kamloops and Williams Lake campuses) the Social Service Worker Certificate (offered through Open Learning) and the Human Service Diploma (offered through Open Learning). The School also has plans to offer a Master of Social Work degree.

A masters degree in social work education child and youth care or nursing is required. A doctorate in a related discipline with a focus on inclusive education is preferred. A candidate who has accumulated experience judged by the Appointments Committee to be particularly relevant to this position and valuable to the School of Social Work and Human Service may be appointed with a relevant masters degree and an undergraduate credential in social work education nursing or child and youth care.
Successful teaching experience in post-secondary institutions is preferred.
The ability to demonstrate and teach lifts and transfer anaphylaxis training epilepsy/seizure supports diabetes/glucagon training Narcan training asthma awareness and personal care in school and/or community settings is required.
A demonstrated commitment to school and community inclusion is required.
A minimum of five years of related practice experience and educational specialization related to basic healthcare and personal care needs of people with disabilities is required.
Availability for scheduled lab times is required.
Candidates must provide evidence of their ability to commit to creating time and space for relationships based on respect as human beings supporting and embracing differences with kindness love and respect (NIMMIWG 15.7).
An ability to demonstrate experience integrating Indigenous knowledge and teaching methods (TRC CA 62) is required.
Proven skills in building student capacity for intercultural understanding empathy and mutual respect (TRC CA 63) is required.
Teaching excellence including developing culturally appropriate curricula (TRC CA 10) is required.
