Job Summary

Job Summary: This position provides specialized instruction and support to students with hearing loss using a variety of communication methods and assistive technologies. The teacher will assess needs develop individualized learning plans and collaborate with a team to ensure student success in inclusive settings.

Job Responsibilities:

Instructional Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of students communication needs language development and academic progress and impacts of hearing loss in the educational environment. This may involve:
    • Utilizing a variety of formal/informal assessment tools.
    • Analyzing student work samples and conducting observations in various learning environments.
    • Reviewing audiological reports.
  • Provide direct and consultative services to students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing across a range of educational settings (general education resource instructional classrooms) in accordance with their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Develop and implement individualized instruction and goals that address the unique needs of each student utilizing a variety of evidence-based practices and appropriate communication modalities (ASL spoken English Total Communication etc.).

Collaboration and Consultation:

  • Participate in the child study team process to determine eligibility for special education services and contribute to the development and implementation of IEPs.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers support staff audiologists and parents to ensure a cohesive and supportive learning environment for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. This includes:
    • Providing professional development and guidance on effective strategies and hearing assistive technologies for teaching students with hearing loss.
    • Co-planning lessons and adapting instructional materials to ensure accessibility.
    • Regularly assessing and communicating student progress on IEP goals and academic development.

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and IEP documentation.
  • Stay current with best practices research and community resources in Deaf Education through professional development opportunities conferences and workshops.
  • Foster an inclusive culturally responsive learning environment that honors Deaf culture language and individual differences supporting academic social-emotional and communication growth.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by building or district administration.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree in Deaf Education
  • Preferred Illinois State Professional Educator License with LBS 1 Special Education Endorsement
  • Demonstrate proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Knowledge of various communication modalities and assistive technologies for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand walk talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to handle or feel materials. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop kneel crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
