Automation and Controls Technicians collaborate with other trades to maintain the Citys assets and ensure regulatory compliance. They monitor and adjust direct digital control systems for HVAC and associated building systems. This role is crucial for the environmentally responsible operation and maintenance of facility mechanical systems aligning with organizational GHG reduction policies.
What will you do
- Operates mechanical/electrical systems through the use of Direct Digital Control Automation
- Programs and schedules equipment to maximize energy conservation throughout civic buildings
- Performs scheduled preventative maintenance including inspecting lubricating diagnosing and repairing pneumatic and electronic controls systems and mechanical components as required
- Performs unscheduled maintenance modification or replacement of mechanical units pipes ducts and various equipment
- Supports various trades in HVAC equipment operation and maintenance where integration with BMS (Building Management Systems) as required
- Performs field checks and other tasks as part of the recommissioning maintenance activities
- Conducts Job Hazard Assessments and ensures all relevant safety standards are maintained
- Attends and participates in toolbox/safety meetings
- Provides training and guidance to apprentices or junior employees
- Communicates effectively with clients contractors and co-workers
- Completes work orders assigned in a timely fashion as per KPI structure
- Communicates to stakeholders upon arrival and before leaving work site
- Performs other related duties as assigned
- Certified Alberta Journeyman in an appropriate Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning Trade such as Plumber/gasfitter or sheet metal mechanic or Air Condition and Refrigeration Mechanic
- Coursework in HVAC Direct Digital Control Systems
- Possession of a current 5th Class Power Engineer certificate (or above) is required
- A minimum of two (2) years experience with HVAC systems and DDC controls. Must have direct experience with boilers chillers fan units and control systems in addition to pertinent experience in multiple mechanical trades
Skills required for success:
- Extensive knowledge of direct digital control automation systems and how to provide optimum building environmental comfort and energy conservation through the use of control systems
- Knowledge of the safety and environmental requirements governing the trade
- Knowledge of the specific heating ventilation refrigeration pneumatic and electronic systems control and associated equipment and systems that provide environmental conditions necessary for building operations such as chilled water systems centrifugal chillers metering devices cooling towers pumps dual speed fans and the ability to troubleshoot hot and cold calls
- An ability to read and interpret blueprints
- Ability to respond to equipment malfunctions by diagnosing the problem and initiating appropriate remedial procedures and repairs
- Ability to work independently and to effectively schedule work to meet service demands and minimize disruption to building users
- Physical ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labour such as long periods of strenuous activity during maintenance and repair procedures as well as the ability to work in various weather and environmental conditions
- Skilled in the use of repair tools and equipment for servicing and repairing a wide range of building system malfunctions
- Competency in the use of computers and computer software such as SAP Plant Maintenance and Google Workspace

Conditions of Employment:
- Alberta Class 5 Motor Vehicle Operators License (or provincial equivalent)
- Ability to obtain and maintain a City driving permit
- May require use of personal vehicle for use at work with reimbursement for mileage as per applicable City policy
- Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton. There may be a cost associated with this requirement
