Job Summary
Apheresis Research Nurse / 32 Hours Variable Rotation / Kraft Family Blood Donor CenterThe Kraft Family Blood Donor Centers Apheresis Core Research Nurse (CRN) in collaboration with the entire core is responsible for the implementation and evaluation of clinical research in their specific program/area. The RN has expert knowledge of cancer as a disease process and the process of conducting medical clinical research both nonprofit and addition the RN utilizes evidence-based nursing practice and has expertise in developing and coordinating a plan of care designed to meet the physical psychological and social needs of those cancer patients and their families undergoing therapy in a clinical research trial. Strong interpersonal organizational and communication skills are required. Knowledge of current literature and a commitment to continued learning are also required. Specific duties and responsibilities may vary across the different programs/areas.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Administrative:
- Assists with protocol development review and updates.
- Assists with Kraft annual protocol review process & assists in developing the protocol budget.
- Collaborates with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Cell Manufacturing Core Facility in quality assurance of clinical trials materials and conduct.
- Serves as research coordinator for National Cancer Institute pharmaceutical-sponsored and National Cooperative Group protocols.
- Prepare weekly suitability for research collections and send it out to the team.
Research:
- Assists with Review and determination of feasibility of new study protocols.
- Assist with creation of documentation and workflows for new study protocols.
- Coordinates workflow of subjects on study protocols.
- Coordinates protocol data management as necessary.
- Collaborates with staff within the Kraft and with outside organizations in the completion of clinical research trials.
- Active participant in audits quality compliance related to clinical research trials.
- Resource for Krafts quality initiatives
- Provides protocol education/in-service training and serves as a resource to Kraft nursing staff and the healthcare team.
Clinical:
- Coordinates protocol treatment and completion of study requirements for patients participating in clinical trials.
- Works collaboratively and functions as an effective member of the health care team.
- Collaborates with Care Coordination for all patient care referrals.
- Collaborates with primary nurse in assuring that patient care needs are met.
- Provides protocol education to patients and families; adapts interactions based on age-specific needs of the patient.
- Documents in charts as appropriate and communicates observations and findings to protocol investigator and attending physicians.
- Monitors the environment of care with attention to patient safety and assures compliance with regulatory agency standards.
- Maintains practice that is evidence-based and consistent with nursing policies procedures licensure/registration requirements and professional scope and standards.
Professional Development:
- Identifies areas for professional growth.
- Formulates professional goals objectives and methods for accomplishing these.
- Pursues active membership of local and national professional organizations.
- Supports research activities within the BWH and DFCI.
- Meets all annual evaluation requirements and competencies within the established time period.
- Collaborates in preparing professional reports articles and presentations for colleagues and the public.
Qualifications
To qualify you must have:
Minimum of 3-5 years of nursing experience in apheresisoncology bone marrow transplant or research nursing
Cellular Therapies/Stem Cell Outpatient/Ambulatory Experience Strongly Preferred
Research and clinical trial management experience strongly preferred
Strong computer skills preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
Be able to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team.
Demonstrate skills in critical thinking problem solving and ability to make independent decisions.
Understand special needs and behaviors of age groups of the population served: all age groups infants to geriatric.
Working Conditions:
Be able to work in clinic and office settings with possible exposure to infectious diseases through airborne transmission or contact with blood or body fluids.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise assistive personnel as appropriate in the provision of patient care.
