Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Manager Maintenance and Grounds the position provides maintenance and repair services to buildings grounds and equipment and performs other related duties as required.

Organizational Status

This position reports directly to the Support Services Assistants Coordinator and is under the general supervision of the Manager Maintenance and Grounds.

Works closely with Facilities Management office staff other Facilities Management employees and the campus community including students staff faculty and contract services.


Work Performed

Provides building maintenance services:

  • Provides on demand and project related carpentry work including but not limited to the repair and installation of interior and exterior door issues installation of shelving cabinetry countertops monitor mounts whiteboards trim and flexible baseboards.
  • Performs small drywall painting and floor covering repairs to damaged or worn areas.
  • Repairs and modifies office classroom and lab furniture.
  • Evaluates appliance issues and repairs or coordinates for maintenance as required.
  • Maintains all plumbing fixtures including emergency eyewash and shower stations through routine testing repairs. Occasional installations of new fixtures include sinks faucets urinals toilets fountains and certain lab equipment.
  • Maintains sanitation systems including washroom fixtures drains toilets urinals catch basins roof and road drains.
  • Provides emergency response to building issues resulting from leaks plugs and floods.
  • Performs annual testing and identification of campus fire extinguishers as well as replacement or refilling and recertification in accordance with the BC Fire Code.
  • Makes minor purchases for maintenance related items using a P-Card.

Provides grounds maintenance services:

  • Provides on demand and project related concrete repairs and improvements including assessment of stairs sidewalks curbs and common areas.
  • Performs the start-up and blow-out of the complete irrigation system and complete backflow testing.
  • Performs new installations of irrigation water sources and ongoing system maintenance including repairs to damaged heads and drip lines.
  • Provides support as required to the operation of the campus irrigation system.
  • Acts as Snow Removal Lead during winter months to assist Facilities Coordinator with implementation of Snow Removal Plan including assigning snow routes to team members communicating with contract snow removal team when needed and calling in overtime snow removal staff when needed.
  • Assists with removal of snow from campus sidewalks common pedestrian areas and application of sand and de-icing in a timely manner to enhance safety on campus.

Provide equipment maintenance services.

  • Conducts or coordinates regular servicing on department owned tractors skid steers bobcats aerial platform golf carts and minor shop equipment.

General duties to include:

  • Adheres to planned maintenance schedules for inspection and services emergency equipment and diverse infrastructures on campus.
  • Paints and maintains traffic markings on campus roadways.
  • Completes minor welding housekeeping and administrative tasks as required.
  • Reports major maintenance requirements to the Manager.

Perform other related duties as required.



Consequence of Error/Judgement
Must exercise judgement based upon a thorough knowledge of procedures guidelines and regulations. Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods such as lock-out procedures fall protection and confined space entry. Conducting work in a manner that accommodates campus requirements. Consequence of errors in judgment can result in safety hazards to the campus community. Work load backlog can delay critical business functions and impact the Universitys reputation.

Supervision Received
This position is under the day-to-day direction of the Support Services Assistants Coordinator and supervision of the Manager Landscape and Building Services.

Supervision Given
This position does not supervise staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent including one year post-secondary trades related training.
  • Over 2 years related experience.
  • Previous work in a unionized post-secondary environment preferred.
  • Class 5 Driver s License required.
  • Ability to operate the following equipment is preferred: skid steer tractor articulating boom etc.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical work assume uncomfortable awkward positions and required to lift 50lbs on occasion.
  • Ability to work in areas which have higher levels of noise using proper hearing protection.
  • Ability to withstand working in the Kelowna climate conditions frequently.
  • Ability to work in confined areas and sustain long period of bending.
  • Ability to withstand heights and perform work safety.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and or shifts and possibly weekends including afternoons and nights.
  • Shifts are subject to change due to operational requirements.
  • Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods such as lock-out procedures fall protection and confined space entry.
