Job Summary

CLASSIFICATION: CATEGORICAL SPECIAL EDUCATION

TITLE: SPECIAL EDUCATION AUSTIM SPECTRUM DISORDER (ASD) PARAEDUCATOR W/AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (ASL) SUPPORT

Location: Meadow Brook ElementarySchool

7 hours per day 5 days per week

Monday Friday following traditional 2025-2026 school year calendar

$17.48/hourper current RPEA Master Agreement

SALARY:$17.48/hour. The hourly wage will be paid from the Instructional Classification Schedule per the Rochester Paraeducator Association Master Agreement.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School Diploma
  2. Native-like American Sign Language (ASL) skills required.
  3. Experience/certification and the desire to work with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students required.
  4. Experience with people/persons with disabilities and/or training in appropriate techniques for interacting with students with disabilities preferred.
  5. Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and to interact appropriately and effectively with students parents and staff.
  6. Excellent attendance record flexibility and competence for assigned responsibilities including ability to meet the physical and academic needs of students.
  7. Regular reliable and punctual attendance required.
  8. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Building or Program Administrator and receives day-to-day direction from classroom teacher; program; resource teacher or Teacher Consultant.

CALENDAR: Follows standard school calendar

JOB GOAL: To provide support to the special education program by assisting students with special needs in compliance with program philosophy and goals for the individual student(s).

The paraeducator provides instructional support via translation between spoken and signed communication for student in school setting. The paraeducator will work under the supervision of the Special Education Administrator the Building Administrator where they are assigned and with the classroom teacher. While signed communication at all times is the primary responsibility the school based paraeducator will also assist the teacher(s) with instructional preteach/post teach vocabulary for the student assisting with transitions between school environments planning activities physical needs communication with building staff and ancillary staff regarding concerns suggestions and planning and additional performance responsibilities as listed below.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. *To provide Sign Language translation of spoken and signed communication between the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) student teachers/peers in a variety of settings.
  2. *When needed under the direction and supervision of the teacher reviews material with the D/HH student that has been recently presented in class introduces/reviews new vocabulary and concepts and/or preteach signs for vocabulary that will be presented in upcoming lessons.

  3. *Reinforces students communication attempts.
  4. *Work closely with staff to communicate concerns accept suggestions and manage classroom schedules.
  5. *Demonstrates and maintains appropriate logistic/physical including lighting dress positioning and eye contact.
  6. *Implements procedures in accordance with student individualized behavior management plans as needed.
  7. *Assists staff with the loading and unloading of students from school buses and vehicles.
  8. *Utilizes instructional plans strategies methods materials and techniques that meet the individual educational needs of the students.
  9. *Maintains confidentiality with respect to student parent and staff information.
  10. *Supervises and assists students while they are involved in activities other than in the

    classroom.

  11. *Participates in physical activities which may be part of the students program and/or

    activities which may be unique to the students educational program including but not

    limited to lunch recess art and/or physical education.

  12. *Performs other duties as assigned by special educators or building principal as

    requested.

  13. May teach new vocabulary to promote socialization between D/HH student and hearing peers/staff.
  14. Performs other related duties as assigned.
