Advanced Linux systems engineering with Python and automation

POSITION: Contract: 01 January 2026 31 December 2028

EXPERIENCE: Minimum 5 years in software/operations engineering with Linux systems 3 years software development

COMMENCEMENT: 01 January 2026

LOCATION: Hybrid: Midrand/Menlyn/Rosslyn/Home Office rotation

Qualifications / Experience

• Bachelors degree in Computer Science IT or a related field
• Minimum of 5 years experience in software or operations engineering particularly with Linux systems
• Minimum of 3 years of IT software development experience

Essential Skills Requirements

• Proficiency in Linux operating systems preferably SLES
• Strong programming skills in Python
• Expertise in LDAP directory services such as 389DS etc
• Experience NFS and CIFS protocols (e.g. automounter netgroups for network file systems)
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

Advantageous Skills Requirements

• Knowledge of Perl with a decreasing emphasis in future projects
• Understanding of advanced networking concepts
• Experience with continuous integration and deployment practices
• Knowledge of cloud platforms and services
• Understanding of IT security best practices
• Ability to adapt to new technologies and methodologies
• Experience with GitHub particularly GitHub Actions
• Understanding of Scrum methodologies for agile project management
• Familiarity with application performance monitoring specifically Grafana
• Experience with infrastructure as code tools and configuration as code
• AAP experience including the writing of playbooks
• Be able to troubleshoot issues with PBIS for authentication and access management

Role Requirements

• Install configure and maintain Linux servers ensuring optimal performance and uptime
• Develop and maintain software solutions on Linux platforms
• Utilize GitHub Actions for continuous integration and deployment
• Write and maintain scripts in Python for automation and process improvement
• Manage authentication and access using PBIS and LDAP
• Configure and manage automounter and netgroups for efficient network file system access
• Participate in Scrum teams to deliver high-quality software solutions
• Use Grafana for monitoring and improving application performance
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and operation
• Provide technical support and guidance to team members
• Ensure adherence to best practices and industry standards
• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance system performance and reliability
• Stay updated with emerging technologies and industry trends to drive innovation
• Reviewing existing playbooks and advising and adapting these playbooks
