The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech has an open position for a full-time veterinarian for multidisciplinary experiences at the rank of Collegiate Assistant Professor (non-tenure track). This position supports the teaching mission of the DVM program by providing preclinical instruction patient care support and technical assistance for small animal labs in a variety of courses offered in the veterinary curriculum. The successful candidate will join a team of faculty and technicians that provides instruction especially laboratory instruction in the following areas: clinical skills anesthesia surgery (including pre-surgery evaluation and surgery discharge/client communication) dentistry physical examinations and others as determined by the Department addition to the instructional duties this position will be responsible for serving as the primary veterinarian for the canine/feline teaching groups which includes being a first-line contact for the medical needs of the patients on the evenings when they are housed in the College. This position will work collaboratively with the Animal Instructor Program (AIP) chair enrolling animals in from the community for teaching purposes as well as being a point of contact for clients regarding the health of their pet(s) while participating in our programs and other inquiries about the programs. Combined with the efforts of the other AIP members and the ACE staff this position will help maintain and grow the AIP program. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of the AIP chair to effectively recruit applicants organize vaccine clinics and complete the tasks to bring in appropriately vaccinated animals for the teaching labs. Additional duties include ensuring there is strict adherence to IACUC protocols during labs and assisting in protocol updates as necessary; assisting in production of educational videos for technical procedures; assisting in the development of animal handling experiences; participating in Objective Structured Clinical Exams; and provide input to the course leaders as to relevant mechanisms to improve the instruction and development of DVM students.
This position will be the point of contact with the shelter medicine and surgery clerkship program and will cover their clinical duties (running the clerkship and teaching the students) on predetermined occasions. The successful candidate will be expected to work in cooperation with other faculty to provide a positive learning experience and serve as a role model for DVM students ensuring the professional activities provided are of the highest ethical and professional standards. Required Qualifications
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent;
Strong experience in small animal medicine and surgery including emergency medicine;
Excellent communication and presentation skills.
Ability to work with a diverse group of colleagues and students.
