About the position

A post-doc position in Microbiology is available in the Cancer Molecular Medicine group of Dr. Enserink at the Institute for Cancer Research at the Division for Cancer Medicine from February 01 2026 for two years (with the opportunity of one year extension). The start date can be negotiated.

The candidate will unravel the effect of the microbiome on treatment response and survival of AML patients.

The organization and research focus
The Cancer Molecular Medicine group is located at the Radium Hospital which is part of Oslo University Hospital the largest academic hospital in Scandinavia.

The group is part of a Norwegian Centre of Excellence (Centre for Cancer Cell Reprogramming CanCell) which consists of six research groups focused on the discovery of cancer programs and the interactions of cancer cells with the cellular environment.

One of the groups aims is to better understand how the patients microbiome including indolent infections affect survival of cancer patients. Specifically this post-doc position will focus on mapping the longitudinal microbiome of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) patients before during and after treatment.

The goal of the project is to determine how specific microorganisms affect treatment response survival and quality of life of AML patients.

Requirements

We are looking for a talented enthusiastic and determined person. The successful candidate is highly self-motivated and can work independently as well as constructively in the context of a team. Given that this work will be conducted in tight collaboration with a highly interdisciplinary team strong and effective communication and personal skills are essential. The candidate has robust work ethics and is focused on delivering high-quality data.
Potential candidates have completed (or are very close to completing) a PhD degree in biology medicine or another form of natural sciences with specialization in microbiology particularly microbiome analysis. The successful candidate is positive-minded is looking forward to learning new techniques and is well organized. Fluent oral and written English communication skills are essential.

Essential scientific qualifications:

  • Experience with microbiome analysis including extraction of microbial DNA from low-abundance and ultra-low abundance samples
  • Experience with molecular biology and/or microbiology techniques
  • The successful candidate is an excellent team player
  • Fluent in oral and written English
  • Preparing scientific articles i.e. preparing figures and writing of scientific reports

Advantageous skills:

  • Proficiency in bioinformatics such as coding and/or computational -omics data analysis
  • Proficiency in statistical methods and the use of tools such as R and graphpad
  • Biobanking of human material
