The George Institute India

The George Institute a wholly owned legal not-for-profit Indian research institute has been conducting research related activities in India since 2002. The George Institute Indias mission mirrors that of the parent organization namely the discovery and implementation of solutions to chronic and disabling health problems through research policy development and capacity building.

A number of large-scale projects in population health systems and clinical research funded by a diverse group of sponsors both public and private are conducted in India. The George Institute India comprises two distinct operating groups: Research and Development and Infrastructure and Resources. It has two separate offices - in Hyderabad and New Delhi where the research staff and senior management are based.

Context and Role

The National Institute for Health and Care Research Global Health Research Centre (NIHR-GHRC) for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and Environmental Change is a four-country multi-institutional collaboration aimed at generating the best actionable evidence to combat the dual challenges of global environmental change and NCDs. Hosted by the George Institute for Global Health India in partnership with Imperial College London and in collaboration with the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research Bangladesh (icddrb) Brawijaya University Malang Indonesia and Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research Chennai India (SRIHER) the Centre aims to make it a recognised centre of excellence on NCDs and global environmental change in low and middle-income countries offering world-leading research training community engagement and policy advice for health equity.

The centre at the George Institute for Global Health in India has been implementing several interventions to improve the lives of millions of people. Health economics research has been embedded in each intervention. The Research Fellow providing health economics support in this centre will have to apply health economics knowledge and skills to help design studies lead the analysis and assist in the interpretation and writing up and dissemination of findings.

Reporting Relationships

The Research Fellow will report to Susmita Chatterjee Program Head: Health Economics Health Systems Science India.

Duties and Key Responsibilities

The Research Fellow will be expected to:

  • Understand the research problem from a diverse research team problem formulation
  • Help with health economics / economic evaluation study design
  • Assist with writing of the health economics / economic evaluation section in the study protocol
  • Understand data collection process develop and review health economics / economic evaluation questionnaire/ case report form and work with the research team to ensure that data is of high quality assist with data review and monitoring
  • Review secondary sources of data relevant to the research question access such secondary datasets and curate them
  • Draw up a health economics / economic evaluation analysis plan in consultation with the research team
  • Clean and prepare datasets for analyses
  • Lead data analysis
  • Help the research team understand analysis methods and work with the research team for further iterations of analyses
  • Lead the health economics write-up in the report and independent manuscript preparation on health economics / economic evaluation work
  • Dissemination of health economics work

  • Participate in special projects to improve processes tools systems and organisation

  • Ensure direct reports understand and comply with GIs Policies and procedures standard operating practices ethical practices (with respect to research) and the legislative environment.
  • Be responsible for managing performance of direct reports including the completion of plans and agreeing on work and personal objectives and reviewing such plans and objectives in accordance with GIs Performance Management and Development Policy.
  • Act as a role model and ensure the teams commitment to GIs values ensuring direct reports perform to a high ethical standard and focus on integrity collaboration and teamwork in all efforts.

Work Health and Safety

  • Comply with GIs Work Health and Safety Policy and related procedures and similar policies which apply when visiting the premises of affiliates and collaborating sites.
  • Promote and contribute to a safe secure environment for staff and visitors.
  • FOR MANAGERS Ensure direct reports understand and comply with safe work practice and procedures.

Skills Knowledge and Experience

  • Master degree in Economics / Health Economics with 4-5 years of experience in working on economic evaluations
  • In-depth understanding and applied knowledge of economic evaluation models
  • Applied knowledge of software for developing a decision tree Markov model
  • Proficiency in working with Microsoft Excel and at least one statistical programming language - R/SAS/Stata
  • Experience in the management of large and complex datasets
  • Strong focus on quality and timely delivery of work
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a high level of proficiency in English
  • Ability to work independently in teams and with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Ability to see the big picture whilst still maintaining a focus on detail and implementation
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing organisational priorities and ambiguous environments
