Job Summary

The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP) at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a full-time benefits-eligible non-tenure eligible Assistant Teaching Professor position in geography. The position is designated as in-person located on the Tempe campus. We especially encourage applicants who can contribute to teaching across the geography curriculum. Particular needs at this time include undergraduate lecture and laboratory classes in physical geography climate & weather and meteorology. However we also anticipate opportunities for the new assistant teaching professor to contribute to various courses in human geography geography capstone and other elective courses serving our MA degree in geography.

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching in SGSUPs Geography degree programs in a variety of modalities (in-person hybrid and online). The Assistant Teaching Professor will be responsible for eight (8) courses each academic year that will include an array of courses primarily but not exclusively at the undergraduate level. Some of the course load may include assisting in the development of new courses or transition of existing courses into online teaching modalities. The Assistant Teaching Professor will also maintain a service load of 20% FTE which may include service on unit and/or college committees and supporting student organizations related to geography.

Essential Functions:

  • Teach eight (8) courses per year primarily at the undergraduate level but may include graduate courses.
  • Assist in the development of new courses or the redesign of current courses into an online teaching modality.

Required Qualifications:

  • A PhD or terminal degree in geography or a related field by the time of appointment.
  • Evidence of teaching or mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students in the geography discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently and manage multiple tasks.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in the Canvas learning management system.
  • Experience teaching online and/or developing online educational materials.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty staff and student communities to advance the principles of the ASU Charter.
