1. Performs manual and clerical tasks involved with receiving packaging marking logging inventorying and storing all items of evidence safekeeping destruction or found property submitted by Police Officers; bar codes property and enters information into computerized inventory system; affixes proper tags and labels for inventory control; observes and ensure the proper chain of custody for property and evidence in accordance to Tribal State and Federal laws;
2. Releases evidence for court or investigative purposes and ensures that the released property and evidence is returned to the Property and Evidence warehouse; answers citizen inquires and complaints regarding property dispositions; and maintain electronic files on all inventoried property.
3. Receives and stores money narcotics; firearms ammunition flammable items or other items of sensitive nature; ensures the proper storage and security of items.
4. Upon receiving destruction orders from Tribal State and Federal Courts properly destroys items of evidence or property no longer required following prescribed Tribal State and Federal laws and Police Department Policy and Procedures.
5. Removes various types of evidence and property from secured evidence lockers and matches up to property impound sheets; determines correct locations to store evidence or property by item type and enters into computerized inventory system.
6. Transports and retrieves evidence from the Scottsdale Police Department and Arizona Department of Public Safety Crime Laboratories ensuring the chain of custody is followed in accordance to Tribal State and Federal laws.
7. May be required to testify in Tribal State and Federal court on procedures pertaining to the chain of custody of evidence and may be requested to transport evidence to court.
8. When required must wear specific personal protective equipment that may include however not limited to facial coverings gloves protective suit filtration system mask and other health and safety equipment.
9. It is essential to become familiar with ALEAP Accreditation principles and standards. Must adhere to ALEAP Standards as it relates to storage identification preservation and transfer of all digital and physical evidence. Comply with all security protocols as well as any audits and inspections.
10. Adheres to all training policies procedures chain of custody rules of evidence and laws. Maintains strict confidence and security of all data financial accounts information intelligence metrics audio video computer analytics and meta data police reports supplements and associated case files physical evidence photographs statistics and any other materials that are confidential and sensitive to all cases investigations personnel records and the operations or property of the SRPD and SRPMIC.
11. Performs other job-related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance departmental operations.
Knowledge Skills Abilities and Other Characteristics:
- Knowledge of the history culture laws rules customs and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
- Knowledge of the operating procedures of a Police Department.
- Knowledge of the equipment used in property and evidence records including communications computers etc.
- Knowledge of the principles codes regulations and laws governing records management.
- Knowledge of modern office procedures techniques and equipment including computer software
- Knowledge of the principles practices and methods of warehousing inventory control material handling storage record keeping and property accounting computer terminal data input and retrieval process.
- Ability to learn applicable Tribal State and Federal laws and civil codes and regulations pertaining to the handling and storage of property and evidence.
- Ability to learn policies court systems and criminal procedures relative to the processing retention and disposal of evidence.
- Ability to maintain the integrity of the Property and Evidence Room by participating in random audits.
- Ability to utilize our computerized records management system documenting evidence data and procedures along with chain of custody procedures.
- Ability to learn safety and security methods and practices involved in the handling and storage of motor vehicles firearms weapons narcotics drugs money and dangerous devices.
- Ability to follow all health safety and welfare training policies procedures and guidelines of the SRPMIC and best practices.
- Ability to maintain legible complete and accurate records and related documents.
- Ability to place property and evidence items and inventory documents in both ascending and descending order by computerized numerical bar codes.
- Ability to devise and maintain storage security and accounting procedures for sensitive valuable and unusual supplies and equipment.
- Ability to coordinate with other law enforcement agencies in the development of procedures for the disposition of property when cases are adjudicated.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers supervisors and other Tribal employees and members of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
- Ability to move/lift objects weighing at least 50 pounds short and long distances and different levels likeplacing items into a vehicle and the ability to walk up and down stairs.
- Ability to climb up and down a ladder of at least 15 feet in height with objects in hand.
