Job Summary

Under general supervision performs skilled work in the protection of life and property by preventing combating and extinguishing fires and by skilled medical attention in the operation of an emergency ambulance.

Individuals in this position also perform work activities in the support of all emergency functions including but are not limited to; training activities routine care and maintenance of vehicles equipment and living quarters fire prevention and public education activities.

All starting LTEs will be paid at an Intern rate of $8.00 per hour while completing a skills evaluation check off.

Essential Job Functions

  • Respond to and perform all necessary activities needed for the providing of emergency medical services to assist PPEMS and the public.
  • Respond to and perform all necessary activities needed for the extinguishment of fires.
  • Perform public education activities by performing home surveys fire station tours fire drills block parties and demonstrations as assigned.
  • Perform custodial work on apparatus vehicles and buildings in a timely and complete manner in addition to making any minor repairs needed. Report any situations that arise to your immediate supervisor.
  • Maintain certification as an EMR or EMT under the guidelines of the Wisconsin Department of Public Health.
  • Attends and participates in training related to firefighting methods vehicle and equipment operation and maintenance emergency medical operations fire prevention activities and other activities directly or indirectly related to the operation of the fire department.

Requirements of Work

Must be at least 18 years of age. High school diploma or equivalent and any equivalent combination of experience professional education and training which provides the essential knowledge skills and abilities:

Knowledge of
  • Working knowledge of accepted methods of emergency medical care and considerable skill in their application under the supervision of EMS.
  • Working knowledge of the principles practices and methods of modern firefighting techniques and possession of skills in their application.
  • Abilitytomaintainadequateattendance.
Ability to
  • Ability to operate a fire engine or ambulance under emergency conditions and to respond to emergencies in a safe manner.
  • Perform duties requiring physical endurance and ability to fight fire and perform all operations connected with firefighting.
  • Ability to react quickly correctly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain Physical & Mental conditions to be able to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to read and comprehend departmental rules and regulations and written material pertaining to firefighting fire prevention emergency medical and department operations.
  • Ability to perform mechanical duties if needed.
  • Cooperate with others within the Department other employees of the City of Sun Prairie and the public.
  • Ability to speak and deal tactfully and effectively with the people with whom they come in contact.
Skill in
  • Must possess skill in monitoring ones own work to ensure quality accuracy and thoroughness; sound judgment in recognizing scope of authority; commit to innovation and continuous process improvement and work collaboratively within the organization.

Necessary Special Requirements:
  • Valid Drivers License upon date of hire
  • Wisconsin Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification or Wisconsin Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) within 3 years of employment. Employee must maintain such certification during their employment without lapse.
  • Obtain Firefighter II within 12 months
  • Obtain Driver and Aerial Operation certification within 2 years
  • Obtain Technical Rescue Awareness within 4 years
  • Obtain the required NIMS courses determined by the Fire Chief within a reasonable time span.

Physical Demands:

Work is performed primarily in an office setting but may also be performed in emergency vehicles outdoor settings and in all weather conditions including temperature extremes anytime during the day and/or night. Work is often performed in emergency and stressful situations. The individual is exposed to hazards of emergency medical scenes including blood borne pathogens and infectious waste as well as hazards associated with fire scenes including smoke noxious odors fumes chemicals liquid chemicals solvents and oils. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions fumes or airborne particles toxic or caustic chemicals risk of electrical shock and vibration.
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit talk and hear. The employee is required to stand walk run use fingers to handle or operate objects reach with hands and arms climb or balance stoop kneel crouch or crawl and taste or smell.
  • Must have the ability to safely lift 100 pounds from floor to waist level (the weight of one end of an average stretcher/individual combination).
  • Must be able to move across a variety of terrain conditions and/or assume awkward positions to assist accident victims.
  • Must be able to pass general strength and flexibility test.
  • Must be able to work under extreme pressure while making life and death decisions.
  • Must be able to stand or walk for extended periods of time.
  • May perform physical tasks with some sleep deprivation.
