Clinical Responsibilities:
- Evaluation of family medicine obstetrics patients at >20 weeks gestation in the Early Labour Assessment Unit (ELAU) for concerns pertaining to pregnancy (e.g. decreased fetal movement possible rupture of membranes threatened preterm labour) or post-partum concerns.
- Consultation as appropriate with in-house obstetrical team.
- Teaching of family medicine residents or students on rotation with PMC
- Management of induction of labour and cervical ripening including placement of Foley Catheters for cervical ripening.
- Management of labour and birth including ROM management of atypical fetal heart rate and obstetrical emergencies.
- Working together with midwifery and obstetrics while on shift to ensure safe care for all patients on the birth unit.
- Cesarean birth operative assisting
- Closed-loop communication with the MRP family physician.
- Rounding on post-partum parent and newborns as requested.
- Acting as a consultant for the midwifery team for unwell newborns.
- Consulting for after- hours staff needle stick injuries.
- Occasional management of parents without access to their family doctors who require clinical assessment (AKA parent in PICU needing assessment for possible UTI)
Requested Time Commitment:
Option One: PMC Focused Physician
- Seeking Commitment for March and April 2026 renewable every 2 months should interest remain.
- Coverage of a minimum of 120 hours per month broken into 6-hour to 12- hour day shifts or 12-hour night shifts.
- At least 60 hours per month should be on nights.
- PMC focused physician will have first access to scheduling for full flexibility.
Option Two: Casual PMC Member
- No minimal shift requirement
- Availability as needed- renumerated by shifts worked.
Renumeration:
- Shifts are paid by time of day and duration.
- Upon completion of 240 hours (2 months) PMC-Focused Physician will receive additional $1000 PMC-Focused compensation bonus.
Qualifications :
Pre-requisites:
- Graduate of a Family Medicine Residency with competency in Family Medicine-Obstetrics.
- NRP training or scheduled course
- ALARM course in the last 5 years or appropriate substitute emergency obstetrical training course or scheduled course. (IWK Family Medicine can sponsor partial cost of course)
- Active or Eligible for privileges at IWK Health.
