Description of Job

The Department of Revenues Taxpayer Service Center employs representatives trained to address citizens tax related inquiries ranging in diversity from sales and marijuana excise tax to wage withholding and income tax.


Our customer focused representatives become highly skilled trained professionals after receiving up to four months of onsite comprehensive orientation and training. These employees learn many key aspects of the role of serving as aTemporary Tax Examiner.For example instructing taxpayers on completion of applicable forms and documents; making determinations of appropriate tax collection procedures and; making authorizations or denials of refunds or assessments. Moreover the Temporary Tax Examiner provides the public with information regarding tax statutes department policies procedures and positions on taxes administered by the department by telephone web messages and issuance of letters.

Call Center:

Call Center Tax Examiners must be able to analyze and understand the tax issues in a fast-paced environment and explain the issues to the taxpayers so that they understand. This is a technical customer service position. Our staff answers inbound calls from the public. We answer both specific and ambiguous tax questions on all taxes administered by the Department of Revenue when callers are unclear confused or uncertain about our statutes/policies/procedures. We analyze accounts for accuracy and completeness making adjustments as necessary and explain adjustments to the callers. We respond to telephone inquiries concerning letters and notices of balance due from the Department request supporting documentation if needed and take the necessary steps to resolve errors utilizing the Departments tax software. The work may include understanding how the Department cooperates with other tax entities such as the IRS other states and city county or local taxing authorities.


Service Center:

Our primary function as customer service representatives is to interact directly in a face to face environment with customers. We are knowledgeable in all tax types and assist walk ins with any tax issue they face. We set up new sales and withholding accounts. Many of our walk ins have received a letter or have documentation supporting their claim. We adjust all DOR tax returns waive penalty issue refunds or bills as necessary. Our Service Center personnel are trained in using our website forms and educating our walk in clientele.


PLEASE NOTE:

The hours for this position areMonday through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:45 PM.New Examiners are required to report to the Denver office at 1351 5th Street Suite 100 Denver CO. 80204 daily for the duration of training. All training is in-office and lasts for 3-4 months. This training period includes classroom training and on-the-job training. Once training has successfully been completed unless there are circumstances that prevent it the examiner is expected to move to a work from home environment with an occasional requirement to travel to the Denver office. Candidates who live 75 miles or more from the Denver location should discuss travel requirements with the supervisor at the time of the interview.

This announcement may be used to fill multiple vacancies within the Taxation Division. Individual work groups have varying responsibilities and job duties.


This is a paid temporary position limited to a maximum of 9 months from the date of hire.In addition to being a fantastic place to work the Department of Revenue offers all temporary employees paid sick leave. Temporary employees accrue one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked capped at 48 hours.

Residency Requirement:

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:

Two (2) years of experience in bookkeeping technical accounting tax administration business economics finance call center high volume Customer Service or related experience.

AND

High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

Education and Experience:A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to Accounting Business Administration Public Administration Political Science or a similar field may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.


Preferred Qualifications:

The preferred candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Experience working in public facing customer service

  • Experience working with tax administration

  • Familiarity with GenTax software

  • Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Previous call center experience


Conditions of Employment with theCDOR:

Employees are in a position of public trust in the performance of their job duties and must operate in a manner that maintains the highest standards of honesty integrity and public confidence.


As a condition of employment with the CDOR all personnel must file all necessary Colorado Individual Income Tax (CIIT) returns and pay tax obligations therefore all employees must undergo a pre-employment evaluation of their tax records/accounts to ensure compliance with this policy. Final candidates must also complete a successful background investigation and reference check prior to appointment. Certain positions based on duties may require scheduled background investigations.


Pursuant to theUniversal Driving Standards Policy any worker who will be expected to drive a State-owned vehicle is responsible for maintaining a safe driving record and a valid driver license prior to driving any State-owned vehicle.

To be compliant with the new fleet vehicle policy Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) will be pulled for review for workers who:

  • Have an assigned State fleet vehicle

  • Are required to operate a vehicle as part of the position

  • Utilize a State fleet vehicle as a pool vehicle

Terms of Employment:

  • Temporary Aides are limited Per Colorado constitution a temporary employee may work for the State no more than nine (9) months in a 12-month period. The 12-month period is not defined as a calendar or fiscal year but a rolling 12-month period that begins with the month of the first day of work for the temporary assignment.

  • For continuous or regular (including part-time) work schedules the temporary assignment starts the actual date the temporary employee begins work and ends after nine months. For example a temporary employee who begins working June 15th may work continuously through March 14th. Upon completion of the continuous nine (9) month assignment the temporary aide must take four (4) months off prior to returning in the same position.

  • Temporary employees pay state federal and local (if applicable) taxes Medicare tax and contribute to the Colorado Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA). They also receive Workers Compensation coverage.

  • Non-permanent temporary employees are ineligible for all State of Colorado Benefits except for CSEAP benefits and Colorado Public Employees Retirement Association PERA retirement employer contributions.

  • Temporary employees are called to work on an as-needed basis; there are no set hours or guarantee of hours.
