The Parks Recreation and Community Service Department is actively seeking two (2) Custodians. To work in their Senior Centers.

This is service--maintenance work in the cleaning and housekeeping of buildings facilities and grounds. Work requires the knowledge of work routines and procedures used in custodial work which is learned on the job. Contacts with people require basic courtesy and tact. The custodial work is strictly routine following specified instructions and established work routines involving similar situations. The work is performed inside and outside where there are some risks and hazards but they are known predictable and controllable. Operates cleaning equipment and power tools and uses hazardous chemicals. The physical demands consist of walking standing sitting and bending exposure to dust dirt and other unpleasant conditions and moving and lifting cleaning equipment and furniture weighing up to 50 pounds. Schedule may include evening or weekend work as required. The work is performed under immediate supervision where the work assignments are subject to established procedures and routines.

  • Sweeps and mops floors steps and corridors.
  • Vacuums and shampoos carpets.
  • Strips seals waxes and buffs floors.
  • Washes windows glass doors partitions woodwork and walls.
  • Dusts and polishes furniture equipment machines woodwork shelves and blinds.
  • Cleans fixtures toilets tile floors and walls in restrooms.
  • Replenishes supplies in restrooms and replaces light bulbs.
  • Collects and disposes of trash from offices hallways and walkways and grounds.
  • Orders cleaning supplies.
  • Maintains records for proper inventory control.
  • Operates powered cleaning equipment.
  • Performs minor maintenance of equipment.
  • Depending on assignment assists senior citizens with preparing and serving meals.
  • Depending on assignment assists senior citizens with activities.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonvilles competencies.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the standard tools materials and procedures used in janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with custodial work.
  • Ability to read and understand warning labels on solvent chemicals.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to make minor repairs to cleaning tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical labor and duties associated with custodial tasks.
  • Ability to operate maintain and care for cleaning equipment.
  • Depending on assignment must have ability to travel between various locations to meet the assignments of the position.

Open Requirements/Supplemental Information

  • Ability to read and write English.
  • Physically able to move and lift cleaning equipment and furniture.
OTHER REQUREMENTS:
  • The probationary period for this class is six (6) months.
  • This is a non-competitive class which does not require an examination for filling vacancies.
  • Depending upon assignment must pass background screening on a local state and federal level as required by the State of Florida Children and Family Services or Elder Affairs.
  • This position performs safety-sensitive functions which are subject to pre-employment random and other drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonvilles Drug Free Workplace Policy (Directive 0401).
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
  • Depending upon assignment a valid drivers license may be required prior to appointment and must be maintained.
  • City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver. depending on assignment may be required and must be maintained.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification is required within six months of appointment and must be maintained.
