Description

Position Summary

The Division of Math and Sciences at Walsh University seeks a creative student-centered scholar to join our team of faculty. The successful candidate will teach both introductory and advanced courses in biology engage in undergraduate research mentor students in their scholarly work and contribute to departmental and university service. This hire supports our mission of integrating strong teaching faith and scholarship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Teach a mix of introductory biology (majors and non-majors) and advanced specialty courses that complement the specialties of our current biology faculty.
  • Supervise undergraduate student research (e.g. independent study honors projects).
  • Develop and sustain an active research program compatible with the resources of a liberal arts university.
  • Advise and mentor students academically and in research paths.
  • Serve on departmental and university committees.
  • Participate in curriculum planning accreditation and continuous improvement efforts.

Required Qualifications (Knowledge Skills and Abilities)

Must understand and support the Mission Vision and Code of Ethical Conduct of Walsh University as a Catholic higher education university as expressed in Ex Corde Ecclesiae and possess the following:

Education: Ph.D. in Biology or closely related field (or ABD with completion by time of appointment).

Work Experience:

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate teaching experience
  • Record of publications or presentations.
  • Experience involving students in research (especially undergraduates).
  • Experience with grant writing.
  • Demonstrated interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Experience with assessment accreditation or curriculum development.
  • Experience with university-level assessment preferred

Skills and abilities:

  • Demonstrated commitment to excellent teaching.
  • Evidence or strong potential for conducting research with undergraduate students.
  • Ability to teach broad offerings in biology (introductory and advanced).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Professional demeanor and ability to interact with charity towards students staff and faculty. Positive attitude a must.
  • Willing to model servant leadership and mission alignment

  • Typical teaching load: 4-5 courses per semester (or equivalent) with adjustments possible depending on research expectations. Research expectations will be scaled to reflect support and teaching load with clear guidance and mentoring in early years.
  • Spending extended periods standing or walking during instructional sessions or related events
  • Using computers audiovisual equipment and other technology or tools which requires fine motor skills.
  • Reading printed and digital materials and effectively communicating with students and colleagues.
