The Iowa River Landing Clinic is seeking a 100% Staff Nurse in Diabetes Education. The Staff Nurse is charged with the responsibilities of assessing patients nursing care needs evaluating effectiveness of care provided integrating nursing theory and research into clinical practices and ensuring patient care standards are met. The Diabetes Nurse Educator functions as a clinical nurse expert and care coordinator interfacing with administrative clinical nursing staff physicians and patients families.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide direct nursing care following universal precautions.
Independently coordinates and facilitates patient care and continuity of care across disciplines.
Adhere to departmental standards and practice guidelines.
Acts as a clinical resource for Diabetes Education.
Communicates autonomously with members of the health care team directing patient care including referring providers.
Revises patient care regime via the telephone or telemedicine within protocols developed.
Manages and supports telephone triage.
Develop patient care plan based on observations and assessments and recommend interventions to attain expected outcomes.
Collaborate and integrate information from patient and family into multidisciplinary patient care plan and evaluate responses.
Implement emergency care procedures when necessary.
Responsible and accountable for the provision of care for patients.
Participate as a member of the health care team utilizing effective communication skills.
Participate in the development of unit department and hospital policies procedures and protocols.
Serve as a member of various University committees as directed.
Develop and implement health education teaching plans specific to patient care needs.
Evaluate and document effectiveness of patient/family teaching.
Participate in the orientation of new nursing staff and the ongoing education and training.
Apply quality improvement principles to improve patient outcomes.
Maintain patient rights and confidentiality and serve as a patient advocate.
Responsible for adherence to legal professional and institutional requirements.
Responsible for maintenance and enhancement of clinical skills.
Maintain effective working relationships with faculty staff students and the public.
Promotes a positive work environment.
Is self-directed in using time.

Education and Certification Requirements
- An Associates degree in Nursing Diploma in Nursing Baccalaureate degree in Nursing or Masters degree in Nursing (MNHP or MSN) is required
- Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required
Experience Requirements
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
1-2 years of recent staff nurse level experience in a diabetes setting
Certified Diabetes Educator or able to become certified within 2 years upon hire
Must be able to work flexible hours
Evidence of positive service excellence
Documented patient education experience
Current experience in self-directed independent roles
Evidence of productive and effective time prioritization and time utilization
Triage Experience required within the last 3 years.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience working in an ambulatory diabetes clinic setting
- Experience using EPIC
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing
- Evidence of working well with a team
- Recent experience in diabetes education
- Experience in collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary team
