Approximately fifty minutes (28 miles) from NYC by train Portledge is nestled on a pastoral 63-acre tree-lined campus that is known for its cherry blossoms in spring. Job Description:
Portledge School is seeking an experienced and mission-aligned 7th/8th Girls Basketball Coach to lead and support the development of student athletes within its 5-8 Athletics Program. The coach will be responsible for developing a competitive inclusive and values-based team that reflects Portledges Mission and Pillars: Kindness Purpose Honor and Respect. This role requires the ability to mentor student-athletes of varied skill levels communicate effectively with stakeholders and represent the school with integrity within the PSAA and NYSAIS leagues.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Design and implement practice plans that develop individual skills team concepts and sportsmanship.
Create a positive inclusive and structured environment that supports personal and athletic growth.
Teach and reinforce basketball fundamentals strategy and conditioning appropriate for middle school level players.
Work closely with the other 7th/8th Girls Basketball Coach to ensure program alignment and consistency in player development.
Serve as a mentor and role model to student-athletes emphasizing teamwork discipline and respect.
Maintain open and professional communication with players parents and school staff.
Support logistics related to team travel uniforms and scheduling in coordination with the Athletics Department.
Uphold all PSAA NYSAIS and NFHS regulations and guidelines.
Attend all practices games (home and away - traveling on the bus with the team)and program-related events.
Qualifications and Skills:
Previous coaching experience preferably at the middle school JV or varsity level.
Strong understanding of basketball fundamentals and team-building strategies.
Ability to inspire and connect with student-athletes of varying skill levels.
Excellent communication collaboration and organizational skills.
High level of integrity and professionalism in representing the school and athletic program.
Bachelors degree preferred (in education sports management or a related field).
Availability for evening and weekend commitments including travel for away games.
Commitment to upholding the values of an independent school community.
Season:
The season begins November 10 2025 and ends approximately around March 15 2026.
