Job Summary

Job Title: Safety Specialist I

Level: Entry-Level Position

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Department: New Construction

Location: NASSCO yard San Diego

Reports to: Safety Site Coordinator

Summary

All Trident employees are expected to adhere to all company policies and procedures with an emphasis on safety and quality. Adherence to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements is strictly enforced. Required PPE includes but is not limited to: Hard hat eye protection ear protection safety shoes IAW TMS Employee Handbook and shipyard guidelines.

Responsibilities

Shows up for Safety walk-throughs on time.

Portrays Trident Maritime Systems in a professional friendly hospitable manner.

Oversees workers in the field for Safety equipment policies and procedures.

Assists in conducting incident and accident investigations.

Prepares and submits safety walk-through reports to management and the safety team in a timely manner.

Establishes maintains and updates files for the Safety department.

Works with Area Managers Hull Managers and jobsite Supervisors to maintain safe working conditions onboard ships and in the Warehouse.

Capable of training others in safety issues policies and procedures.

Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skill and/or ability required.

Experience and ability to work in a fast-paced environment

In alignment with company standards and the Trident Maritime Systems Employee Handbook must be able to work well with all levels of personnel whether individually or in a team environment.

Willing to work any shift and overtime as required.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma (highly preferred).

No prior experience in the Safety field required comprehensive training will be provided.

Previous experience or familiarity with the NASSCO yard in San Diego is a plus.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Responsible for conducting safety trainings with ongoing training provided to enhance knowledge and skills.

Comfortable and confident speaking in front of large groups.

Basic reading writing and arithmetic skills required.

Ability to read and interpret documents instructions and procedures accurately.

Ability to take direction follow instructions and complete tasks thoroughly.

Flexibility to work on a variety of assignments and in multiple locations on a daily or hourly basis.

Strong reliability dependability and teamwork skills.

Proficient in using computer systems for generating and submitting reports.

Proficient in using Microsoft Office products especially Outlook Teams Word Excel and PowerPoint.

Language Ability:

Bilingual proficiency highly preferred (English/Spanish); ability to communicate effectively in both languages is a strong advantage.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not have formal supervisory responsibilities; however the Safety Specialist I is expected to:

Provide guidance and orientation to employees on safety policies procedures and safe work practices.

Lead by example and promote a strong safety culture across all job sites.

Support and coach employees in understanding and complying with safety requirements.

Serve as a resource for safety-related questions and concerns.

Assist in reinforcing accountability for safe behaviors through communication and follow-up.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job the employee will be required to:

Frequently walk and stand for extended periods during shipboard inspections and safety walk-throughs.

Regularly climb ladders stairs and scaffolding often multiple times per shift.

Work in confined spaces at heights and in environments with limited accessibility.

Occasionally lift carry or move objects up to 25 pounds.

Maintain balance and coordination while moving through uneven or moving surfaces on board ships.

Have sufficient vision and hearing to identify hazards and communicate effectively in noisy environments.
