Overview

The Department of Animal Dairy and Veterinary Sciences (ADVS) at Utah State University (USU) is seeking applicants for a Clinical Assistant or Associate Professor in Equine Veterinary Medicine and Applied Reproduction. This opportunity is a 12-month fiscal-year faculty position apportioned 95% Teaching (including instruction and clinical services) and 5% Service in the S.J. and Jessie E. Quinney College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (QANR). The successful candidate will also hold a secondary appointment in the Department of Veterinary Clinical and Life Sciences (VCLS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM).

The successful candidate will be expected to provide leadership in equine clinical teaching applied reproduction and veterinary service. The position requires a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree (or equivalent) and licensure (or eligibility for licensure) in the state of Utah.

Excellence in teaching and mentorship is highly valued at USU. The successful candidate will be expected to teach ADVS undergraduate courses ADVS 2300 Horse Health Care and ADVS 4220 Applied Equine Reproduction. They will also co-instruct two courses Large Animal Theriogenology and Equine Parturition and Post-Natal Care and will oversee a clinical rotation in theriogenology for the DVM program. The teaching assignment will be determined based on the departments needs and the successful applicants expertise. The candidate will also be expected to provide undergraduate graduate and professional students with opportunities for experiential learning via the candidates clinical activities.

The successful candidate will serve as the primary clinician for the USU Sam Skaggs Family Equine Education Center oversee equine clinical and reproductive services and provide leadership and coordination of equine programs in collaboration with ADVS the College of Veterinary Medicine USU Extension and the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station.

Responsibilities

Teaching (95%)

Instruction and supervision

  • Provide classroom and clinical instruction in equine veterinary medicine and applied equine reproduction with emphasis on serving students in the Equine Science & Management program in ADVS and veterinary medicine program in the CVM.
  • Develop and deliver high-quality experiential learning opportunities for undergraduate graduate and professional students.
  • Mentor students in clinical practice applied reproduction and professional development.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and continuous improvement of equine teaching programs.

Direct clinical services and other professional activities

  • Serve as primary clinician for the Equine Education Center.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for equine programs including coordination with ADVS the College of
  • Veterinary Medicine and the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station.
  • Manage equine clinical and reproductive services to support program operations and student training.
  • Ensure effective communication and collaboration with faculty staff and stakeholders to maintain excellence in equine program administration.

Service (5%)

  • Participate in service activities at the department college and university levels as well as professional service in relevant associations.
  • Support shared governance student clubs and professional outreach aligned with equine veterinary medicine.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree (or equivalent).
  • Eligibility for and maintenance of veterinary licensure in the state of Utah.
  • Demonstrated expertise in equine veterinary medicine and applied reproduction.
  • Strong record of teaching effectiveness and student mentorship.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel/drive statewide to provide educational programming. Must be willing to stay compliant with USU travel policy 5302.
  • Willingness and ability to provide on-call veterinary clinical support on evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board certification (or eligibility for certification) by the American College of Theriogenologists (ACT)
  • Familiarity/experience with equine assisted reproductive management practices/technology
  • Experience with clinical teaching and supervision in equine veterinary medicine.
  • Administrative or program management experience in equine settings.
  • Engagement in professional service or leadership roles in equine veterinary organizations.
  • Familiarity with land-grant university systems and interdisciplinary collaboration.
