Job Summary

Description

The Senior Director of Coding is a strategic and operational leader responsible for overseeing all aspects of professional and hospital coding across the health system. This role ensures coding accuracy regulatory compliance revenue integrity and operational efficiency for both inpatient and outpatient services. The Senior Director will lead a multidisciplinary team manage vendor relationships and collaborate with clinical financial and IT stakeholders to drive performance and innovation.



Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership

- Develop and execute system-wide coding strategies aligned with organizational goals.
- Lead initiatives to improve coding accuracy productivity and compliance.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for PB and HB coding across specialties.

Operational Oversight

- Direct daily operations of coding teams for inpatient outpatient and professional services.
- Oversee coding workflows audit response and corrective action planning.
- Manage performance metrics including DNFB coder productivity and denial rates.

Compliance & Quality

- Ensure adherence to ICD-10-CM/PCS CPT HCPCS MS-DRG APC and payer-specific guidelines.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of CMS OIG and other regulatory requirements.
- Lead internal and external coding audits and implement quality improvement plans.

Technology & Innovation

- Oversee implementation and optimization of CAC (Computer-Assisted Coding) and autonomous coding tools.
- Collaborate with IT and EHR teams to enhance documentation and coding integration.
- Evaluate and deploy automation solutions to improve coding efficiency.

Vendor & Stakeholder Management

- Manage relationships with outsourced coding vendors and ensure SLA (Service Level Agreement) compliance.
- Partner with CDI compliance revenue cycle and clinical departments to align coding practices.
- Provide regular updates to executive leadership on coding performance and strategic initiatives.



Qualifications
Qualifications:

- Bachelors degree in Health Information Management Healthcare Administration or related field (Masters preferred).
- RHIA RHIT CCS CPC or equivalent coding certification required.
- Minimum 710 years of progressive leadership experience in hospital and professional coding.
- Deep understanding of PB and HB coding workflows regulations and technologies.
- Experience with Epic or other major EHR systems preferred.
- Strong analytical communication and change management skills.

Preferred Skills:

- Experience leading coding operations in a multi-entity or academic health system.
- Familiarity with risk adjustment HCC coding and value-based care models.
- Proven success in implementing CAC and autonomous coding platforms.
- Ability to synthesize data and present actionable insights to senior leadership.
