The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting

for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Fairbanks!


What you will be doing:

The Department of Fish & Game Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Fish & Wildlife Technician 3 stationed in Fairbanks. This is a permanent seasonal full-time position responsible for working as part of a team in the Regional Wildlife Information Center. The Information Center assists people from around the world answering questions about hunting and trapping regulations hunting opportunities hunter education and wildlife viewing in the region and statewide. This position provides customer service to the public and supports field and logistical operations for research and management biologists throughout Interior and Northeast Alaska. This is currently a 11-month seasonal position. If additional funding is available the position may be extended beyond 11 months otherwise the selected applicant will be placed on seasonal leave without pay. The position is overtime eligible.

This position serves as a primary source of public information and service in the Fairbanks ADF&G Public Information Center. The incumbent provides customer support related to hunting and trapping regulations issues permits and harvest tickets sells licenses and tags and collects and records harvest data. The incumbent seals animals such as bears furs and sheep on a regular basis maintains vehicles and equipment and classifies analyses and summarizes harvest data. The position also supports wildlife management and research through fieldwork including aerial surveys nuisance wildlife response and occasional wildlife capture and handling.

The working conditions you can expect:

The position is located at the ADF&G office at 1300 College Road in Fairbanks. The daily work environment involves effective communication and teamwork with office coworkers regular computer use and assisting the public both in person and over the phone. Fieldwork is required throughout the year and may involve exposure to wildlife biting insects inclement weather firearms low-level aircraft flights and/or travel by boat or skiff. Aerial surveys are conducted in small aircraft maneuvering at low altitude for extended periods often in cold conditions.

  • This position may require field work which can involve exposure to large animals insects inclement weather low level flying in planes and helicopters travel by boat or skiff and contact with drugs and chemicals used to immobilize wildlife.


Who we are looking for:

The key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  1. Providing high-quality customer service to diverse groups including explaining complex hunting fishing and trapping regulations in Alaska and interacting professionally with occasionally agitated or angry customers.

  2. Demonstrating knowledge of Alaskas plants animals fish and habitats and engaging in discussions with hunters trappers anglers and wildlife viewers. This includes assisting the public with human-wildlife interactions and intervening when necessary.

  3. Handling money and data accurately including maintaining records entering data and following established instructions and protocols. Proficiency using computer programs for data entry analysis and archiving is required.

  4. Working with animal carcasses or animal parts which may be unpleasant and handling live animals including trapping hazing and euthanizing when necessary while ensuring the safety of yourself your team and the animals.

  5. Demonstrating the ability to work both independently and as part of a team in office laboratory or remote field settings.

This position may be in possession of or have access to firearms/ammunition.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher guide or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish wildlife outdoor manual labor or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries wildlife or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection.

Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals insects inclement weather low level flying travel by boat or skiff or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses vessels or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
High school diploma equivalent means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

Fields of study comparable to fisheries wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture biology ichthyology microbiology ornithology and zoology.
