Position Summary:
OpenStax (an initiative of Rice University) is the worlds largest non-profit publisher of open educational resources (OER) and a provider of interactive research-informed learning technologies for high school and college. We are also the lead organization for the nations seminal education research infrastructure SafeInsights. Our mission is to provide amazing learning experiences for every student and instructor. We do this by offering free access to high-quality digital teaching and learning resources that support the teaching and learning journey. Since 2012 OpenStax has created a library of more than 70 free and openly licensed college textbooks that have served millions of students across the globe resulting in $2.98 billion in student savings. Currently we are creating interactive research-informed learning experiences that support heightened student engagement in the learning process. OpenStax seeks to become an organization that continuously strives to learn reflect and make actionable better policies and practices for everyone at work and in education.

The Instructional Success Specialist is responsible for improving sustainability and driving the success of our faculty and student users. They will analyze and leverage data to identify and prioritize key higher education decision-makers regarding educational technology usage. They will foster manage and deepen relationships in order to drive sales of OpenStax products and/or OpenStax Technology Partner Products.

Ideal Candidate Statement:
The ideal candidate will have prior experience establishing and building relationships with higher education course technology and course materials decision-makers and influencers. They should have a track record of demonstrable success driving sales of educational products and delivering successful user experiences.

Workplace Requirements:
Fully remote: This position is fully remote permitting all tasks to be completed from any location within the United States. Working hours will remain Central Standard Time. Per Rice policy 440 work arrangements may be subject to change.

*Exempt (salaried) positions underFLSA are not eligible for overtime.
This position is funded by a grant soft and/or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of funding.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree
  • 3 years of experience
    • In lieu of the experience requirement additional related education above and beyond what is required on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted

Skills:

  • Ability to effectively communicate both written and verbal
  • Familiarity with business development databases
  • Presentation skills
  • Basic financial analysis skills
  • Attention to detail

Preferences:

  • Expertise in developing sales and marketing content and materials pertinent to educational technology and course resources
  • Entrepreneurial mindset
  • Familiarity with core requirements for educational technology usage and implementation basic understanding of FERPA accessibility LMS types and usage courseware and educational product basics and bookstore-campus structures

Essential Functions:

  • Build strong relationships with faculty administrators educational technology specialists instructional designers IT and other parties becoming their trusted advisor for instructional solutions
  • Leverage OpenStaxs existing user base to transition existing adopters to purchasing users
  • Seek out and engage prospective customers through lead analysis campus-generated data (e.g. course schedules) third-party targeting data discovery sessions and introductory presentations of OpenStax learning solutions
  • Drive and participate in webinars approved conference presentations/sessions faculty training workshops and related events
  • Undertake on-campus activities related to driving OpenStax usage and successful implementation
  • Ensure effective implementation and proper use of OpenStax technologies including driving successful faculty onboarding sell-through to end-users and ensuring proper information flow between and among campus entities (e.g. bookstore IT) and OpenStax collaborators
  • Collaborate with OpenStax product management marketing customer experience finance and other teams to effectively communicate user needs and product benefits and ensure that users have the necessary information and support to make decisions and use our products
  • Use a CRM system to develop and maintain the pipeline from prospect to close to repeat usage as well as record and optimize user data and engagement to foster intra-OpenStax communication

Additional Functions:

  • Participate in university-wide and/or organization-wide initiatives and cross-functional teams to establish the organization as a strategic partner and thought leader
  • Support market research and analysis projects
  • Gather contextualize and report product experience-related feedback to relevant team members
