Job Summary

Project Summary

The Animal Law Program (Program) at the Sturm College of Law seeks to advance research and understanding in the field of animal law and to educate the next generation of advocates to protect the well-being of nonhuman animals in the United States and around the world. Through courses externship opportunities events and cutting-edge research the Program engages with a variety of topic and perspectives in the field of animal law designed to advance the well-being of nonhuman animals.

Position Summary

Working under the supervision of the Faculty Director the Visiting Fellow (Fellow) will undertake research in the field of animal studies and contribute to the intellectual life of the Program the Sturm College of Law and the University of Denver.

This is an eight-month contract scheduled to commence in January 2026.

This is a non-benefited position not to exceed 1000 hours in a calendar year.

Essential Functions

  • Scholarship: With the support of the Director of the Program the Fellow will conduct rigorous publishable research in the field of animal studies broadly conceived. The fellowship is designed to provide an individual with a track record of scholarly publications with the resources and time to advance additional scholarly projects that will advance the field of animal studies.

  • Engagement: During their fellowship term the Fellow would be expected to share their research by way of a public lecture or workshop presentation participate in events sponsored by the Program and otherwise contribute to the intellectual life of the Sturm College of Law and the University of Denver.

Required Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in a field relating to animal studies
  • Excellent research writing and oral communications skills
  • Outstanding judgment integrity dependability and professionalism
  • The ability to function both independently and in a high-paced collaborative work environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • An earned doctoral degree in a field relating to animal studies
  • Familiarity with the field of animal law and policy

Work Schedule

  • Normal hours are typically Monday through Friday 8:30 am 5:00 pm. Some evening and occasional weekend hours are required.
  • Responsibilities of the position could accommodate a flexible work schedule including remote work.

Salary Rate

This position pays a monthly stipend of $6500 from January-August 2026.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The compensation offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate departmental budget availability internal equity considerations and available market information but not based on a candidates sex or any other protected status.
