The Seasonal NR Aquatics Preprofessional supports ecology projects through hands-on fieldwork and laboratory activities that maintain study and restore local freshwater ecosystems. This role offers valuable training in aquatic species propagation ecological monitoring and environmental data collection.
What Youll Do
- Assist with aquaculture operations including freshwater mussel propagation fish care and general lab support.
- Sample fish macroinvertebrates and freshwater mussels to assess aquatic biodiversity and ecosystem health.
- Collect and analyze water quality data using monitoring instruments and standard protocols.
- Operate boats motors trucks and electrofishing equipment during fieldwork.
- Maintain clean organized and safe laboratory and field work areas following established safety procedures.
- Provide excellent teamwork and contribute to a positive collaborative work environment.
- Perform other related duties to support aquatic ecology initiatives.
What Youll Need
- 18 years of age or older at time of hire.
- Valid Drivers License in good standing.
- Pursuing or recently completed a degree in biology fish management or aquaculture ecology or a related field.
- Basic knowledge of field sampling techniques.
- Knowledge of aquatic ecosystems and the ability to identify common invasive species.
- Proficiency in the safe operation of boats within one month of employment.
- Must have the ability to swim.
- Comfortable working in wilderness and in remote areas.
- Able to work independently or in teams.
Schedule & Pay
- This position has two different durations of employment.
- One position can work from March/April to October 2026.
- One position can work from June to November/December 2026.
- Schedule is Monday Friday 40 hours per week.
- $17.00 per hour
- Shirts hats and an allowance for safety boots are provided. Safety boots are required.
Work Setting
- The positions are based out of the Urban Stream Research Center in Blackwell Forest Preserve with frequent travel to Forest Preserve sites in the county.
- This position will regularly travel into water areas. The ability to swim is required.
