The Nurse Lead for Outreach and Special Projects provides strategic leadership in public health nursing overseeing a team of nurses engaged in education outreach and quality improvement initiatives. Key responsibilities include:
Leading nurses who deliver immunization education and support quality improvement activities related to the Vaccines for Children (VFC) grant
Overseeing outreach and educational efforts that promote vaccine confidence and equitable access
Serving as a liaison to healthcare providers and community organizations to strengthen partnerships and engagement
Managing nursing staff who may assist with immunization clinic coverage as backup ensuring operational readiness and continuity of services
Overseeing nursing functions in response to disease outbreaks including coordination of staff roles implementation of public health protocols and support for timely community interventions
This position plays a vital role in shaping immunization strategy and advancing community health beyond grant-funded activities. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader with experience in team management public health strategy and community engagement.

We Require
Two years of nursing experience in a community setting public health setting school physicians office or other relevant nursing practice
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and a valid unrestricted Registered Nurse License issued by the Arizona State Board of Nursing or a license issued by another state recognized by the Arizona Board of Nursing as a multi-compact license state
We Also Value
Bachelors degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited School of Nursing
Experience in team leadership and management
Pediatric nursing experience in community/public health school physicians office acute or other relevant nursing settings
Experience with building partnerships with community key stakeholders
Job Contributions
Team Leadership: Provides leadership and supervision to public health nursing staff by offering guidance direction performance feedback and training to support professional development and effective service delivery. Prioritizes team members workloads to ensure alignment with public health goals and responsiveness to community needs. Assesses program and unit operations identifies emerging public health priorities and communicates recommendations to management to enhance outreach education and immunization efforts.
Outreach and Special Projects: Leads outreach and educational initiatives to promote vaccine confidence and ensure equitable access serving as a liaison to healthcare providers and community organizations to strengthen partnerships and engagement. Provides consultation and technical assistance; plans coordinates and evaluates program requirements and objectives; interprets regulations to promote best practices; and contributes to the development revision and implementation of policies and procedures. Serves as a subject matter expert in public health outreach and immunization strategies.
Immunization Services: Provides immunizations to children and adults in high volumes in clinic settings community events or in areas of need.
Public Health Outreach & Education: Plans coordinates and evaluates nursing operations in response to disease outbreaks ensuring alignment with public health objectives. Interprets applicable regulations and guidelines to promote best practices in staff deployment protocol implementation and timely community interventions.
Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an office or administrative setting where there is little to no substantial exposure to environmental conditions and requires standing and walking to a significant degree
Ability to exert up to 20 pounds occasionally up to 10 pounds frequently and negligible amounts constantly
Must have reliable transportation and may require traveling to another location if coverage is needed
Must be able to participate in emergency response training as scheduled and be available to respond as directed in the event of a public health emergency
Must secure and maintain an Arizona Department of Public Safety Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card and complete a background check
Valid Arizona drivers license is required upon hire
Basic Life Support certification is required upon hire
Within one month of hire all employees will be required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles mumps rubella) Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria) Varicella (chickenpox) and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
