Main Purpose of Job

This position provides system and school level leadership andstatewide support for improving mathematics instruction and student outcomes inMaryland. The position plays a critical role in advancing the statesmathematics priorities including those outlined in the Maryland PreK-12Mathematics Policy and the Blueprint for Marylands Future.

Theposition will lead the design and delivery of the Mathematics SchoolImprovement Network which builds the capacity of school leadership teams toimprove the quality of math instruction and student outcomes in collaborationwith district leaders with an intense focus on schools in improvement status. Alsothe ensures alignment between Marylands mathematics policy and classroompractice by supporting Local Education Agencies to develop and sustain localsystems for high-quality professional learning curriculum implementation andinstructional leadership.

POSITION DUTIES

Servesas a strategic partner to LEA leadershipto ensure coherence build shared ownership and support improved mathematicsoutcomes for Marylands students.

  • Leads the design implementation and continuous improvement of Marylands Math School Improvement Network to support the states mathematics priorities.
  • Designs and delivers professional learning experiences and aligned coaching for school leadership teams. Develops resources tools and aligned training materials to ensure statewide coherence in coaching models and expectations.
  • Develops initial and ongoing training of other state coaches to design and facilitate professional learning and school-based coaching.
  • Collaborates with district leadership teams and MSDE colleagues to align professional learning curriculum implementation and coaching supports to evidence-based mathematics instructional practices.
  • Facilitates and contributes to the development of local mathematics instruction implementation infrastructures including the use of coaching frameworks instructional walkthrough tools and continuous improvement cycles.
  • Reviews and provides feedback on LEA math plans data reports and implementation deliverables to ensure coherence with state priorities.
  • Supports the Director of Mathematics in managing key projects preparing policy guidance and organizing statewide mathematics events and convenings.
  • Maintain internal systems and tools to ensure strategic coordination and accountability and contributes to developing implementation guidance documents communication memos and tools that support internal and external mathematics stakeholders.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelors degree in mathematics STEMeducation or a related area from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Five (5) years of experience in managing and leadingmathematics and/or STEM programs in prekindergarten through 12 settings. Oneyear of this experience must include supervising and coaching professionaleducation staff.

Notes:
  1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Masters degree or the equivalent of 36 credit hours of post-baccalaureate course work in mathematics STEM education or a related area for two years of the required experience directly related to the position.
  2. The required field of education and experience are unique for this posting and are established by MSDE in accordance with Education Article Section 2-104 of the Annotated Code of Maryland. The specific education and experience qualifications for each position are on record in the Office of Human Resources.
  3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in Education Program classifications or Education Program specialty codes in the Education field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education one year of which must have been in an administrative supervisory or consultative capacity.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a Maryland State Department of Education Employee andpossess at least one year of experienceproviding technical assistance support coordination or administration ofmathematics-STEM programs.

  • Skill in implementing monitoring and evaluating education program.
  • Skill collaborating with diverse communities and organizations for the purpose of analyzing programs and strategies.
  • Skill in developing and delivering professional development programs.
  • Ability to interpret and apply learning standards policies and regulations.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work as a team member and establish and maintain effective working relationship.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
