The Department of Corrections Division of Institutions is recruiting for
an Education Coordinator position located at the Ketchikan Correctional Center (KCC) in Ketchikan Alaska.

What you will be doing:

The Education Coordinator is responsible for teaching and assisting Ketchikan Correctional Centers (KCCs) inmate population in areas including Adult Basic Education GED life skills vocational education and post-secondary education. The Education Coordinator coordinates volunteer programs to include religious programs and substance abuse volunteers.

Who we are looking for:
We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:
  • Applies Technology to Tasks: Selects and understands procedures machines or tools that will produce the desired results; identifies or solves problems in machines computers or other technologies as they are related to performing tasks
  • Education and Training: Knowledge of teaching training research making presentations lecturing testing and other instructional methods
  • Planning and Evaluating: Organizes work sets priorities and determines resource requirements; determines short- or long-term goals and strategies to achieve them; coordinates with other organizations or parts of the organization to accomplish goals; monitors progress and evaluates outcomes.
  • Integrity/Honesty: Behaves in an honest fair and ethical manner. Shows consistency in words and actions. Models high standards of ethics
  • Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information (for example ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example technical sensitive controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others attends to nonverbal cues and responds appropriately.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree from an accredited college in education counseling social or behavior sciences or a closely related field;
AND
One year of journey level paraprofessional experience in educational or vocational education programs or services. This experience is equivalent to work such as the Vocational Rehabilitation Assistant 2 or Education Program Assistant and similar classes with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Additional qualifying work experience may substitute for the education on a year-for-year basis.

Special Note:
An extensive background investigation will be required for successful applicants.

Working with inmates requires care in observing institution security policies and procedures and may involve personal risk. Some positions perform activities that require bending crouching walking or standing for long periods of time. Some work activities involve discomfort or unpleasantness such as moderate noise levels vibration dust dirt or odors associated with operation of equipment and/or tools in performance of duties.

PREA NOTIFICATION
The Department of Corrections follows and maintains federal and state requirements standards including but not limited to Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards which apply to all public and private institutions that house adult or juvenile offenders. PREA standards preclude the department from hiring or promoting anyone who has engaged in or been convicted of any conduct which would violate PREA standards related to sexual assault including:

  • Sexual abuse in a prison jail lockup community confinement facility juvenile facility or other institutions.
  • Convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force overt or implied threats of force or coercion or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse; or
  • Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described above.

EDUCATION

If post-secondary education is required to meet the minimum qualifications you must fill in the Education section of the application. Copies of transcripts are required to verify educational credentials if used to meet the minimum qualifications for a position. Transcripts can be attached at the time of application or provided at the time of interview at the discretion of the hiring manager.

It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKS/APSIN/ACOMS

Please be aware this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN)/Alaska Corrections Offender Management System (ACOMS). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN/ACOMS. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has beenconvicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.
