The nonpartisan Legislative Affairs Agency provides objective accurate and timely services and products to the Alaska Legislature and Alaskans to support and inform policy making facilitate public access to the legislative process and preserve the legislative institution.

The Legislative Affairs Agency encourages employees to improve their skills by enrolling in professional development courses directly related to their job responsibilities. Employees may apply for reimbursement for the cost of tuition and books for one undergraduate college-level course per calendar year for which they receive a minimum of a C letter grade.


Work/Life Balance

Work/life balance is supported through:

  • The potential for flexible work schedules during interim when the legislature is not in session.
  • Agency staff may accrue as compensatory time up to 150 hours of hours worked over the standard work week. There is no cash value to compensatory time.
  • The State offers paid leave starting at 6:04 (h:mm) a pay period or 21 days a year. If you have previous time working for the State of Alaska in a leave eligible position the time will be calculated into your accrual rate.
  • 12 paid State holidays each year

Job Summary

The Media Services Technician performs technical and public information services in the Media Services Office. The position coordinates and monitors the online streaming of public meetings responds to and distributes information to the public via e-mail and phone and assists the supervisor with office operations.


Examples of Duties:
  • Monitors legislative streams and maintains the schedule for the public on upcoming hearings available via streams.
  • Schedules streams operates teleconference equipment and monitors audio and video quality of meetings in progress. Maintains communication with the Juneau LIO & KTOO during the hearings and publishes announcements of delayed/canceled/rescheduled meetings.
  • Troubleshoots problems with streaming equipment performs updates to streaming computers.
  • Answers telephones and responds to questions from constituents and legislative staff.
  • Conducts basic research on topics related to statutes legislation and legislative actions.
  • Identifies appropriate resources for public questions and provides contact information.
  • Takes photographs using supplied equipment.
  • Processes media as directed by the supervisor.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Ability to write and speak clearly concisely and in a well-organized manner.
  • Ability to act professionally objectively and impartially in dealing with legislators and public.
  • Ability to communicate and perform effectively and diplomatically with personal contacts.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle politically sensitive work.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.
Some relevant work experience.

Additional Required Information

Special Note:
This is a fully exempt job class under AS 39.25.110(3). Positions in the Legislative Affairs Agency are required to be politically neutral.
