Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Data Science & Strategy Lead to join the He Kokonga Whare a Kitea project team. This strategic initiative in partnership with the University of Canterbury and funded by the Teritary Education Commission aims to accelerate student success through data-informed approaches.
The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues across the University to shape and support the development of a student-centric data strategy enabling the University to better understand and act on insights that promote student success.
This is a fixed-term full-time or secondment role through to 18 December 2026. This role involves regular face-to-face collaboration with staff and stakeholders with flexible working arrangements available where appropriate. We are looking for someone who is available to start as soon as possible.
Key responsibilities:
- Strategic Data Leadership: Work with stakeholders to develop and implement a student-centric and future-focused data strategy.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Build strong relationships across faculties central service units and external partners to uplift data capability and foster collaboration.
- Operational Data Support: Provide expert guidance on data needs and analysis including co-designed dashboards and reporting tools to ensure data quality and relevance.
- Sector Collaboration: Work closely with University of Canterbury partners and contribute to sector-wide innovation in student success data.

You are a collaborative and strategic data professional who thrives in environments that value partnership innovation and shared purpose. You bring a strong mix of technical expertise relationship-building skills and a commitment to improving student outcomes.
Key requirements:
- At least 8 years experience in data science and/or advanced analytics.
- Proven ability to co-lead data strategy and cross-functional initiatives.
- Proficiency in tools such as Power BI SQL Python and data modelling practices.
- Experience with data governance catalogues and metadata repositories.
- Ability to engage in culturally responsive practice and uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
- Experience in tertiary education or student success frameworks is desirable.
