Position Summary:

Rice Universitys Research Support Shop better known as the Machine Shop is seeking an experienced Research Machinist to join our team of highly skilled professionals. This Research Machinist will play a critical role in producing advanced precision scientific instruments and components to support cutting-edge research. The Research Machinist will take on additional leadership project management and process optimization responsibilities working closely with researchers engineers and other machinists to drive innovation and efficiency within the shop.

Ideal Candidate Statement:

The ideal candidate is a highly experienced and versatile machinist with proven expertise in complex CNC programming and multi-axis machining advanced precision fabrication techniques and the ability to lead and mentor other machinists. This role demands independent judgment advanced problem-solving skills and initiative to innovate and improve machining processes and workflows. Prior experience managing projects providing technical guidance and interfacing directly with faculty and research teams is essential.

Workplace Requirements:

This position is a full-time on-campus position necessitating all duties to be performed in person at Rice University Campus. PerRice policy 440 work arrangements may be subject to change.

*Exempt (salaried) positions underFLSAare not eligible for overtime.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Associate Degree
    • In lieu of the education requirement additional related experience above and beyond what is required on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted
  • 2 years of industry experience as all-around machinist including setting up and operating manual lathes manual vertical milling machines light sheet metal fabrication. Set up program CNC vertical mill with conversational control and with CAM software (Mastercam).
    • In lieu of the experience requirement additional related education above and beyond what is required on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted

Skills:

  • Good verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Operate lathes and vertical milling machines

Preferences:

  • 10 years of industry experience
  • Technical or vocational school training preferred
  • Previous experience in scientific precision instrument fabrication
  • Experience in R&D machining prototype work

Essential Functions:

  • Proficient in trade mathematics geometry/trigonometry
  • Creates customized scientific instruments tools and parts by precision machining
  • Lathes Bridgeport milling machines saws belt sander and tool grinding
  • Make sheet metal fabrications using sheet metal shear and sheet metal brake
  • Works from verbal instructions or self-drawn informal designs.
  • Checks sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work
  • Identify multiple surface finishes
  • Skillfully works a wide variety of materials including brass aluminum copper tool steel stainless steel graphite composites and plastics
  • Operate assigned machine (Mill Lathe etc.) independently with little to no guidance to include applicable setup
  • May informally instruct safe shop practices and practical design to non-shop personnel.

  • Non-smoking air-conditioned shop
  • 40-hour work week Monday through Friday 8:30am-5:00pm
