Duties and Responsiblities
1. Law Enforcement Operations
Apply law enforcement practices to county ordinances state and federal laws.
Respond to emergencies safely and promptly.
Prevent crime and protect property and persons.
Control and regulate crime scenes and emergencies.
Respond to calls for service and public concerns.
Conduct criminal investigations and gather/preserve evidence.
Arrest suspects and file reports.
Testify competently in court.
Enforce laws related to recreational activities.
Enforce laws and ordinances specific to school property.
2. Public and Community Relations
Communicate professionally and courteously at all times.
Educate the public on safety issues through programs and presentations.
Conduct youth and community programs.
Maintain relationships with school staff students and administration.
Provide instruction in schools on safety and prevention topics.
Communicate effectively with other agencies and the public.
3. Emergency Response and Safety
Render first aid and conduct rescue/recovery operations.
Monitor and assist emergency service providers in dangerous situations.
Respond to recreational emergencies (e.g. snowmobiles boats ATVs).
Cooperate with other agencies in rescue and recovery efforts.
4. Documentation and Information Management
Document incidents thoroughly and accurately.
Receive evaluate prioritize and disseminate information efficiently.
Complete and file affidavits for civil processes.
Maintain knowledge of department programs and refer inquiries appropriately.
5. Specialized Assignments
School Resource Officer: Respond to school-related incidents provide consultation and maintain presence in schools.
Civil Process Deputy: Serve legal documents pursue leads for personal service and file necessary paperwork.
Recreational Patrol Deputy: Maintain equipment enforce recreational laws and assist parks department.
Court Services Deputy: Provide court security coordinate transportation and assist with court-related tasks.
6. Professional Development and Teamwork
Maintain LESB law enforcement certification.
Attend training and staff development activities.
Participate in staff meetings and team problem-solving.
Provide backup during absences or peak workloads.
Perform other duties as assigned.
7. Ethical Conduct and Confidentiality
Maintain integrity and honesty.
Adhere to confidentiality policies.
Maintain professional relationships with staff and management.
Qualifications
Education/Experience/Knowledge:
High school diploma or GED
Sixty (60) fully accredited college credits or an Associate degree in Law Enforcement or
Law Enforcement related field and current certification as a law enforcement officer in the State of Wisconsin or licensed or certified as a law enforcement officer in another state and eligible to become certified in Wisconsin preferred preferred.
Ability to complete training and become certified as a law enforcement officer.
As an alternative to the post high school education requirements the Sheriffs Deputy
must have non-lapsing LESB certification prior to February 1 1993.
Knowledge of county ordinances state laws standards of care and procedures
commonly accepted as Law Enforcement standards.
Knowledge of civil process laws and procedures and the ability to properly serve the

Must pass a law enforcement officers background investigation.
Must pass a standardized psychological screening for law enforcement officers.
Must pass a standardized physical exam for law enforcement officers.
Must have the ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner sometimes at high speeds often in inclement weather.
Must have the ability to safely and effectively discharge handguns shotguns and rifles sometimes under high stress situations in various conditions.
Must have the ability to properly deploy various tools of force and restraint common to the Law Enforcement profession.
Must be a resident of Wisconsin and reside within 15 miles of Polk County.
