Position Function:
The Senior Sponsored Program Accountant provides advanced accounting support within the Controller and Treasurers Office and assists Business Managers Accountants and other fiscal personnel at the university. This position assists in providing post award research administrative support focused on Subaward management and oversite from initial setup of the subaward reviewing and tracking invoices reporting and the closeout process. This position also provides internal oversight and review as a team leader and works in coordination with Sponsored Programs Accounting leadership with internal and external training.

Department Profile:
Sponsored Programs Accounting is primarily responsible for managing the restricted funds of Mississippi State University.
This includes calculating and posting overhead invoicing the appropriate agencies monitoring timely receipt of the funds and preparing financial reports for external agencies.
Additionally our office coordinates the time and effort reporting cycle processes cost transfers performs non-sufficient fund checking on restricted funds and continuously monitors accounts for compliance purposes.
It is our goal to provide friendly efficient service to all users of the sponsored programs accounting system.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

- Process initial subaward setup and subaward modifications.
- Review and track subaward invoices.
- Facilitate the subaward closeout process.
- Monitor project expenditures for adherence to contract/grant term conditions and compliance with Federal/State regulations.
- Prepare and review interim financial reports and invoicing documents as required.
- Assist with development and implementation of sponsored program accounting system enhancements.
- Perform close-outs on expired funds.
- Train Sponsored Program staff.
- Coordinate workload assignments among the Sponsored Program staff.
- Offer guidance and support to various users of the sponsored programs accounting system to include Deans Department Heads principal investigators departmental staff etc.
- Prepare accounting entries for recording to general ledger.
- Supervise assigned personnel when manager is absent.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Bachelors degree Accounting or Business
2. Five years of related experience
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Bachelors degree in Accounting
2. Experience working in Research Administration
3. Experience working in Banner software application
4. Advanced degree (E.g. MBA) and/or professional certification (E.g. CRA CFRA CPA)
5. Experience with subawards grants contracts and cooperative agreements

Working Conditions and Physical Effort
1. Routine deadlines; usually enough lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor; frequent evening and weekend work is required.
2. Job frequently requires sitting reaching talking hearing and handling objects with hands.
3. Job occasionally requires standing walking stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling and lifting to 25 pounds.
