Position Summary
The Food Technologist is responsible for the innovation maintenance and enhancement of products within the tortilla category. This role collaborates cross-functionally with operations finance sales and marketing to drive new product development from concept through commercialization. The position requires extensive interaction with manufacturing during implementation and cost optimization projects. The ideal candidate is highly adaptable self-directed and comfortable operating independently in a dynamic environment.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the development and implementation of new products driven by customer requests and marketing initiatives utilizing both internal and external resources.
Interpret and translate customer product requirements into actionable development parameters.
Manage shelf-life testing: collect validate and document data maintaining accurate records and sharing results with project stakeholders.
Oversee product testing including ingredient pre-batching and sample preparation.
Maintain and update Plant Test Forms for all trials ensuring accurate documentation and database management.
Monitor and validate manufacturing processes during plant tests to ensure compliance with specifications.
Conduct analytical and sensory evaluations of finished products post-trial recording and interpreting results using scientific and food science principles.
Develop and verify nutritional information labeling declarations and ensure regulatory compliance with applicable governmental agencies.
Drive prototype development identify target formulations and lead on-site commercialization efforts in coordination with Sales Marketing and Operations.
Provide technical support to internal teams and external customers utilizing food science expertise.
Build a thorough understanding of current production capabilities across designated facilities.
Execute product line extensions cost optimization initiatives and quality improvement projects.
Participate in concept development and innovation programs.
Develop maintain and update product specifications technical data sheets and related documentation.
Flexibility to work non-standard hours including evenings weekends and holidays as needed.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience:
Bachelors degree in Food Science Cereal Science Biology Chemistry or a related field.
Bakery or tortilla product development experience preferred.
23 years of experience in fresh or frozen baked goods development preferred.
Prior experience in food manufacturing and basic knowledge of plant operations a plus.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word Excel PowerPoint OneNote) and other relevant software.
Strong project management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects from concept through commercialization.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Solid math analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Strong organizational and time management skills with keen attention to detail.
Effective collaboration and interpersonal skills; ability to coach and support team members.
