Job Summary

The SFO Fellows Program provides recent graduates and emerging professionals with an immersive 12-month fellowship that combines meaningful project work mentorship and professional development at one of the nations leading airports. Fellows receive mentoring career development support and networking opportunities for professional are highly encouraged to continue with City employment beyond their fellowship year and will receive guidance in applying for other employment opportunities within the SFO Airport Commission.

For SFO is offering two fellowship opportunities in the following areas:

  1. Safety & Compliance Fellow
  2. Custodial Operations Services Fellow

Safety & Compliance Fellow Work alongside the Safety Management System (SMS) Team to support FAA regulatory compliance and airport-wide safety initiatives. Duties include assisting with risk assessments hazard tracking safety data collection and contributing to safety campaigns. Fellows will help expand SMS implementation to more than 25000 airport employees by July 2027 gaining valuable skills in program management stakeholder engagement and regulatory analysis. 

Custodial Operations Services Fellow- Work with SFOs Custodial Operations Services to ensure that airport facilities meet the highest standards of cleanliness safety and operational efficiency for passengers employees and visitors. With over 25 million square feet of cleanable space across terminals offices and operational areas Custodial Operations Services plays a critical role in maintaining SFOs reputation as a world-class airport. 

You are excited about this opportunity because you will:

  • Gather organize and interpret data to support airport programs such as safety operations and workforce planning.
  • Contribute to the development of reports dashboards and presentations that summarize findings highlight trends and support informed decision-making.
  • Create and update tracking tools documentation and visual resources that capture project milestones compliance activities and performance results.
  • Coordinate project tasks monitor progress and collaborate with internal and external partners to meet goals and timelines.
  • Research and document procedures workflows and standards that align with SFO policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain databases and spreadsheets that monitor staffing levels safety activities or facility metrics while ensuring data accuracy and consistency.
  • Participate in meetings workshops and team activities to gain understanding of SFO operations systems and public service functions.
  • Develop communication materials and resources that help convey operational information to staff and stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to share data gather input and recommend process improvements.
  • Demonstrate initiative adaptability and professional growth while learning SFOs operational analytical and administrative practices.

Please note that incumbents in this classification may be required to perform duties as listed in the class specification which can be found on DHRs website: 9910-Public Service Trainee City and County of San Francisco.

Nature of Work: The normal work period is Monday through Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm.


Qualifications :

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a high school degree; AND
  2. Completion of 90 semester units or 135 quarter units from an accredited college or university by the appointment date.

Desirable Qualifications: The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word Excel Outlook PowerPoint etc.). 
  • Experience using Microsoft Teams for communication and collaboration. 
  • Interest in public service aviation or professional development. 
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills. 
  • Eagerness to learn and take initiative on projects. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues staff and external stakeholders exercising professionalism and sound judgment.

SELECTION PROCEDURES

The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview. Depending on the number of applicants the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited for an interview.

NOTE: Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through all of the steps in the selection procedure.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance: Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check including FBI fingerprints and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1 every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.

Customs Clearance: This position requires that the incumbent be qualified for unescorted access to the San Francisco International Airport U.S. Customs Security Area. An application for a U.S. Custom Access Seal may be submitted to Customs ONLY after employment has commenced. Employment in this position requires that the incumbent submit an application for successfully acquire and maintain a Customs Access Seal. Per Civil Service Commission Rule 110.9.1 every applicant must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for this examination. Failure to acquire or maintain customs access a requirement for this position may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission. Customs Access Seal requirements and procedures are located in the Code of Federal Regulations Title 19 Part 122 Sections 181 or 189.
