Position Description:
The estimating intern assists with the daily assignments of an entry-level estimator under close supervision. This includes preparing cost estimates and all estimating forms and formats for conceptual estimates and final bids. The intern will aid the overall estimating team in bidding on or determining prices for products and services. This position assists team members in all aspects of the preconstruction/bidding stage of a project. The internship program provides the intern and Hensel Phelps with an extended opportunity to evaluate if the fit is right for a long and successful career with Hensel Phelps after graduation.
Position Qualifications:
- Candidates are preferred to be pursuing a 4-year degree in Civil or Structural Engineering Architecture or Construction Management.
- Computer software - Microsoft Office Suite specifically Excel based templates Prolog Primavera On-Screen Take-Off SAGE Assemble and AutoDesk Suite.
- Strong communication skills.
Essential Duties:
- Assist in preparing quantity takeoffs with the detail necessary to build an estimate which accurately reflects required labor material equipment and other subcontract categories.
- Assist in securing bid scopes and pricing for estimates by soliciting bids from vendors and subcontractors.
- Assist estimators in putting together bids writing contracts etc.
- Help with reviewing specifications for project requirements including products materials execution deadlines etc.
- Assist with writing bid manuals.
- Help with maintaining cost databases.
- Obtain pre-qualification information from subcontractors.
- Other duties as assigned.
Physical Work Classification & Demands:
Heavy Work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 35 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
ï The individual in this position will periodically walk kneel sit crouch reach stoop read/see speak push pull lift stand and finger/type. The frequency of each action varies by workflow and field activity.
ï Walking - The person in this position needs to frequently move about the jobsite.
ï Sometimes operates a computer or tablet and other office machinery such as a calculator and phone.
ï The person in this position frequently communicates with employees and external stakeholders regarding a variety of topics related to office and field administration.
ï Constantly reads written communications and views mail submissions. Will also need to read and understand blueprints load charts and take/verify field measurements.
ï Climbing Ascending or descending ladders stairs scaffolding and ramps at various heights.
ï Working from heights the person must be comfortable and able to work from heights for extended amounts of time.
ï Balancing Ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling and to walk stand or crouch.
ï Stooping Bending the body downward and forward by the spine at the waist.
ï Reaching Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction for various lengths of time.
ï Grasping Needs to apply pressure to an object with fingers and palm regularly.
ï Visual acuity and ability to operate a vehicle as certified and appropriate.
ï Occasionally exposed to high and low temperatures.
ï Frequently exposed to noisy environment and outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
ï Use of hands and wrists with various tools.
ï Prolonged use of jackhammer and pavement breaker.
ï Use of wheelbarrows and brooms.
ï Repetitive use of hands and wrists using power rotational and vibration tools including prolonged use of jackhammers and pavement breakers.
ï Tolerate legally permissible exposure to dusts and chemicals such as cement dust solvents and curing compounds.
ï The person must be able to safely wear a respirator and is able to pass applicable medical and fit testing examinations.
ï Must be able to hear commands from supervisors and back-up safety alarms on equipment.
