The Wheatbelt Community Legal Centre (WCLC) is recruiting for a Tenant Advocate to join the team!

This is a rare opportunity to join a small passionate and supportive team delivering vital legal services across the Wheatbelt region. You will work closely with the Principal Solicitor and team providing clear and practical tenancy information advice referrals and education to empower individuals to resolve issues uphold their rights and maintain stable housing.

Living and working in the picturesque town of Northam

Our centre is based in Northam a thriving country town in the Avon Valley just over an hour from Perth. With a population of around 7000 Northam offers a welcoming community modern amenities and a relaxed lifestyle surrounded by scenic countryside. Its a perfect base for those seeking balance - professional purpose alongside personal space and connection to country.

About the Role

As a Tenant Advocate you will:

  • Provide clear and practical tenancy information advice and case-based advocacy to empower tenants and help resolve housing issues.
  • Liaise and negotiate with landlords real estate agents the Housing Authority and other agencies to achieve fair outcomes for clients.
  • Contribute to community legal education and outreach across the Wheatbelt helping people understand their rights and prevent housing issues.
  • Build strong partnerships with community organisations and stakeholders to support coordinated service delivery.
  • Maintain accurate client records and data in line with WCLCs policies reporting and risk management requirements.

Please note that this role is Part-Time (3 days per week).

We value tenancy advocacy experience - but more importantly were looking for someone who will contribute to our collaborative community-focused culture. Were seeking a team member who prioritises team cohesion and brings empathy curiosity flexibility and a strong commitment to social justice. We encourage applicants who meet most of the following:

  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Outlook Word and Teams.
  • A demonstrated commitment to the principles of social justice.
  • A demonstrated capacity to work with legal concepts in reference to statute law and case law.
  • A demonstrated ability to work productively meet deadlines and to produce quality outcomes.
  • A demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships.
  • A demonstrated ability to work in a team.
  • A completion of or acceptable progress towards (Bachelor) qualification in law legal studies justice studies psychology behavioural science social work human services welfare studies and/or business studies (desirable).
  • Experience working in a community legal centre or community-based agency (desirable).
  • Sound knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act and/or housing programs and policies (desirable).


Successful applicants will also need a satisfactory National Police Check Working with Children Check working rights in Australia and a current drivers licence.

  • Competitive salary package: $88000-$95000 (pro-rated based on ordinary hours worked) per annum plus superannuation.
