WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
The primary duties of the position are to identify research analyze and update criminal history records that may impact an offenders legal right to possess a firearm under federal law and to enter results of the completed research into the National Instant Background Check System (NICS) Indices for expedited evaluation of prospective firearms transfers/purchases. The incumbent will access a variety of confidential criminal justice databases as well as use publicly available sources as part of the research process. The research is important in order to ensure a person is not unduly detained from purchasing a firearm as well as ensuring persons with prohibitive criminal history records are denied the right to purchase a firearm.

OUR ORGANIZATION MISSION AND CULTURE:
The Criminal Records & Identification Bureau is Alaskas central repository for criminal records and is the primary point of contact for Alaska for the Federal Bureau of Investigation NICS program regarding the screening of firearms purchases pursuant to the Brady Act. The work of this unit serves to improve update and make available for both NICS personnel and other parties concerned in the criminal justice system accurate and applicable information about the status of misdemeanor domestic violence convictions that may qualify as firearms prohibitors under federal law. The work completed by this position supports the mission of the Division to provides technical and specialized services to the Department of Public Safety other law enforcement agencies and the public at large by ensuring state criminal history records are complete and accurate in the national database and in the NICS Indices for ensuring only those without disqualifying records are approved for firearm transfers/purchases.

The incumbent will work with a team of highly dedicated hardworking individuals engaged in extensive research and analysis of criminal history records ensuring expedited processing of research requests from the FBI protecting the public from the danger of prohibited persons from purchasing a firearm and to decrease delays in purchasing firearms for authorized persons. This position provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about criminal history records and criminal justice information systems in general the opportunity to develop and expand research and analytical skills and the ability to increase knowledge reviewing and interpreting federal and state laws regulations and code all while managing a high volume of work within a team environment.

THE WORKING CONDITIONS YOU CAN EXPECT:

This position is located in East Anchorage in the Department of Public Safety (DPS) Headquarters building located at 5700 East Tudor Road. Office space consists of individual workstations in an open area to encourage collaborative efforts; the office area is shared with two other Criminal Justice Technician IIs. The Chugach Mountains provide the backdrop for the building and ample parking is available; public transportation drop points are located directly in front of the building and paved trails are located right next to the building.

Successful completion of training under a formally established Criminal Justice Technician 1-2 flexible staffing training plan with the State of Alaska;

AT TIME OF INTERVIEW:

  • A list of three (3) professional references including daytime telephone number and email address; at least two (2) of these must be from a current or former supervisor. Professional is defined as a supervisor or an individual who has direct knowledge of your work performance.
  • Copies of your last two (2) performance evaluations or two (2) recent letters of recommendation if performance evaluations are not available.
  • If using post-secondary education to meet the minimum qualifications a copy of your transcript(s).
  • Unofficial copies are acceptable but must have the institution name/URL listed on the transcript


BACKGROUND CHECK

This position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check. Due to the sensitive nature of this position and required access to APSIN an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.


CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENT
The successful candidate will be required to read understand and agree to via signature an agreement of confidentiality concerning the work commonly encountered within the Department of Public Safety to qualify for this position.
