Power & Politics is CBC News Networks daily political show airing weekdays 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. ET. The program based in Ottawa is looking for a highly organized producer to take on the responsibility for building the programs daily lineup in iNews.

Your primary role will focus on building the programs lineup contributing to Power and Politics journalistic impact and record. The teams goal is to expand the audience beyond the traditional political realm and outside the programs daily broadcast.

The hours of work will be Monday to Friday 11:00-19:15 but are subject to change due to operational requirements.

Your role:

The lineup producer is expected to contribute significantly to the editorial direction of the show. This includes building and maintaining the lineup of segments throughout the live two-hour program.

The producer will also seek out new stories and voices contribute creative and innovative story pitches uphold a commitment to original journalism and make editorial decisions when necessary.

Other duties include chasing guests researching stories writing scripts producing graphics and video editing. There is a requirement to develop meaningful stories and contacts and to ensure a diversity of voices and perspectives in all news treatments. There is often a requirement to coordinate the activities of others for the production of this material. Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or program policies practices and standards but initiative and independent judgment are required.

Key tasks:

  • Manage lineup for the live two-hour daily program and breaking news from the control room.

  • Maintain clear communication with the director and associate director to ensure the program adheres to timing and requirements for program breaks.

  • Initiate pitch and pursue news coverage ideas and treatments for Power & Politics.

  • Establish and maintain contacts with key political players and their staff.

  • Exercise editorial responsibility as delegated by senior producers and the executive producer.

  • Screen and time segments and whole programs noting necessary information ensure needed revisions are made in lineups and scripts and inform all affected personnel of any changes.

  • Participate in the evaluation of all aspects of the production including the vetting of supers banners and boards.

  • Develop program online and social media content including writing researching and/or editing (text graphics video).

  • Obtain and organize technical and production resources required by the program.

  • Edit encode digitize and package audio and video material for the daily program

  • Ability to work quickly and independently in the case of breaking news

As required performs the following tasks:

  • Attends production meetings and provides input regarding program content and production requirements. Liaises with other specialized contributors to ensure that all production requirements are met.

  • Prepares lineups/rundowns and assists in the presentation of scripts.

  • Initiate editorial pitches

  • Edit and mix or direct the editing and mixing of audio and/or visual elements.

  • Write continuity re-write or edit text created by others.

  • Assist in maintaining a level of communication or rapport with members of the team.

  • Perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the program unit.

  • Field production including planning coordinating and producing off-site interviews and remote broadcasts.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • A university degree or equivalent.

  • Previous control room experience is considered a strong asset.

  • A quick thinker who can adapt and adjust programs from hour-to-hour and sometimes minute-to-minute.

  • A strong editorial leader with vision who is confident in making decisions and changes whether it be editorial or to the presentation of the stories we are telling.

  • Previous experience working in a national or local newsroom in daily news.

  • A solid understanding of Canadian politics and its place alongside both American and wider international political issues.

  • Ability to take initiative be proactive and work independently.

  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and to respond to many competing demands in a short space of time without sacrificing creativity or quality.

  • Proven capacity to problem solve and troubleshoot in fixed time environments.

  • Ability to write clearly and concisely.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent production skills including graphics creation.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop meaningful stories and develop contacts.

  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings overtime and weekends as required.

  • Ability to participate in a highly creative and collaborative team in a dynamic work environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to take direction and work cooperatively within a small production unit.

  • A willingness to mentor.
