This graduate internship is a full-time position Summer-Fall 2026 (May or June through December) on site in Rochester Minnesota.
The Mayo Clinic Engineering team is looking for an intern to assist our full-time project managers. The primary purpose of the Engineering Internship is to provide students with relevant engineering experiences.
This internship goes from approximately May through December 2026. It is on-site in Rochester MN. Some interns have been able to maintain an on-line evening college course but accepting this position requires the intern to not pursue any significant coursework for the summer or fall of 2026.
The position offers a wide range of job responsibilities including: implementing improved portfolio management processes; assisting project managers in developing and maintaining project schedules and budgets; interviewing stakeholders and drafting project requirements; drafting product documentation (technical writing); gathering metrics to track progress toward strategic goals; helping develop and document best practices in product development; and creating custom reports related to the project portfolio to help make strategic decisions.
Mentors will be assigned to provide instruction guidance and to assess performance. The intern is responsible for learning the procedures and processes of the Engineering team. The intern will be given work assignments to reinforce the learning experience and to provide benefit to the work unit. The assignments may include developing a project strategy gathering user needs requirements and specifications evaluating commercial components performing design verification and design validation and participating in design reviews. Assignments are within the context of Engineerings Quality Management System (including safety risk management) and are performed in a multi-disciplinary development engineering environment. The intern will be responsible for completing all internship-related assignments and reports for both Mayo and the participating educational facility (if applicable).
The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills both written and verbal; have strong technical writing skills and be able to author technical documents; work independently; have experience in new product development; have proficiency in Microsoft applications such as Office SharePoint Teams and Excel to manage data and create reports; and have a desire to learn about medical device development.
The candidate will learn development processes and documentation requirements of medical device creation; gain experience conducting stakeholder interviews to elicit needs and requirements; lead meetings to gather content for product support documentation verification and validation; gain project hours that would provide experience needed for pursuing the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
The incumbent must be enrolled in an engineering management information systems or other technology-related degree program from an accredited college or university and have completed a minimum of four semesters or the equivalent of instruction toward their degree.
A GPA of 3.4 or greater on a 4.0 scale
