Job Summary

Job Title: General and Special Education Homebound Teacher

Reports to: Executive Director for Special Population Services

Dept.: District Wide

Exemption Status: Exempt/Professional

Pay Scale: Teacher payscale

Work Calendar: 187 days

Primary Purpose:

In collaboration with special education and campus staff implement the IEP including goals consultative services and accommodations/modifications to students in the Homebound setting.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelors Degree from accredited University
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required Special Education endorsements for assignments
  • ESL Certification required

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
  • Knowledge of Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
  • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder and developmental disabilities
  • Ability to instruction students and manage their behavior
  • Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • At least three years special education teaching experience is preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Collaborate with students parents and other members of staff to develop IEP through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned.
  • Implement an instructional therapeutic or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies activities materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula as needed and assist special education students in progressing on the IEP.
  • Participate in ARD Committee meetings for assigned students.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by IEP.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal measures.
  • Be a positive role model for students; support mission of school district.
  • Schedule times and dates to visit the home and provide services.
  • Notify the parent in advance if the scheduled service time needs to be rescheduled or canceled.
  • Deliver instruction and assignments/tests provided by the classroom teachers.
  • Administer State Assessment as needed in the home setting.
  • Report to Campus Case Manager with input on IEP progress and present levels of performance.
  • Pick up and return all assignments from classroom teachers.
  • Implement the IEP including goals consultative services and accommodations/ modifications with fidelity.
  • Collaborate with related service providers (both school-based and private) to ensure student is receiving all that is possible in the homebound setting.
  • Provide weekly Homebound Services as determined by the ARD committee.
  • Document and report weekly attendance to the Special Programs department and the students home campus.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
  • Establish and maintain open communication with parents students principals and teachers.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues students parents and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Keep informed of and comply with federal state district and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.

  • Compile maintain and file all physical and computerized reports records and other documents required.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Participate in professional development activities to maintain current knowledge of rules regulations and practices.
  • Seeks accepts and responds to feedback.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds) ; may lift and move text books and classroom equipment; May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint; and assist non-ambulatory students. Move small stacks of textbooks media equipment desks and other classroom or adaptive equipment.

Environment: Work inside may work outside; regular exposure to noise; work must be performed onsite: Daily attendance and punctuality at work and community home sites are essential functions of the job; Alternate work schedule; Exposure to biological hazards; Occasional district and statewide travel; Recognize and respond to crisis situations; Use of evidence-based techniques to appropriately de-escalate a crisis.

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours.
