WDFW Program- Habitat Program Restoration Division

Duty Station- *Olympia Washington Thurston County

*While this position may offer a telework option the successful candidate must be available to report to the duty station as needed.


We are recruiting to hire at the Engineering Aide 3 (EA3) or Engineering Aide 4 (EA4) level dependent on the successful applicants qualifications for this position. This recruitment does not offer an in-training option.

Salary-Depending on which level you are hired at your salary range will be as follows:

Engineering Aide 3- $4882.00 - $6576.00 monthly

Engineering Aide 4- $5137.00 - $6906.00 monthly

This is an opportunity to contribute to conservation protection and restoration of healthy aquatic and riparian ecosystems.


In this dynamic role you will provide construction inspection for fish screening fish passage bank protection and more!


We are seeking a candidate to work closely with section engineers and provide an essential supporting role for habitat restoration projects.



WHAT TO EXPECT -

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role this position will:


Under general direction of an engineer or Construction Project Coordinator performs highly-skilled sub-professional engineering tasks and develops engineering documents.

  • Uses AutoCAD Civil 3D CADD software to produce detailed engineering design plans.
  • Creates surface models profiles and cross sections.
  • Prepares and exports data for hydraulic and other design models.
  • Computes earth moving volumes and material quantities.
  • Reviews engineering drawings specifications and guidelines for accuracy and makes necessary revisions.
  • Peer reviews the work of others and provides constructive feedback.
  • Gathers collects classifies and enters raw data into CADD from a variety of sources (survey GIS LiDAR).


Works independently and as a member of a team to collect and manage detailed engineering research and survey information in the field and identify design features for construction.

  • Completes topographic surveys collects streambed substrate and soil samples and gathers hydrologic and hydraulic data including documenting scour and water quality.
  • Performs skilled field data collection with a high degree of precision accurately describes documents records information and integrates data into CADD.
  • Evaluates and validates field data to determine accuracy and ensures deliverable products are transferable to others.
  • Utilizes survey instruments and hand tools to gather identify classify incorporate and establish data points of interest and significance during the collection process in the field.
  • Creates electronic data files using total station and RTK GPS equipment saves and downloads data files to computer.


Serves as the engineers representative in the field before during and following construction. Makes experienced decisions regarding design schedule and budget under only general guidance of a professional engineer.

  • Keeps the engineer informed of field activities and documents work performed materials used weather conditions and other information important and/or specific to the project.
  • Makes field adjustments on a semi-independent basis with input from the engineer on significant design schedule and budget modifications.
  • Coordinates with the engineer to evaluate and approve/deny/adjust/negotiate change orders and pay requests.



Working Conditions:

Work setting: 70% office 30% fieldwork. May encounter adverse weather and sea conditions noise odors repetitive movements of hands finger manipulations long periods of sitting squatting walking. This position may involve working in or near water including tasks that require navigating negotiating and performing duties related to water environments.


Schedule: Typically Monday Friday 8:00 AM 5:00 PM. Alternate work schedules may be available upon supervisors approval.


Travel requirements: Travel throughout the state to evaluate site conditions and attend meetings is required. Periods of overnight travel may be required and work hours often exceed the standard workday.


Customer Interactions: Agency staff other government agencies tribal private stakeholders and the public.



QUALIFICATIONS:


To qualify at the Engineering Aide 3 Level:

High school diploma or GED equivalency and four (4) or more years of professional experience in computer aided drafting GIS modeling surveying engineering design and/or professional involvement in aquatic environment restoration.


License: Valid drivers license.


In addition to the requirement above the incumbent must also have experience in/with the following:

  • AutoCAD Civil 3D design software and current drafting methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS software and how to use equipment such as Total Stations Laser levels GPS and RTK.
  • Microsoft Office Suite software (e.g. Excel Word Outlook etc.).


Special Requirement/Condition of Employment:

Successful completion of agency training and/or certification dependent on supervisory direction position need and training availability.



To qualify at the Engineering Aide 4 Level:

High school diploma or GED equivalency and five (5) or more years of professional experience in computer aided drafting GIS modeling surveying engineering design and/or professional involvement in aquatic environment restoration.


License: Valid drivers license.


In addition to the requirement above the incumbent must also have experience in/with the following:

  • AutoCAD Civil 3D design software and current drafting methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS software and how to use equipment such as Total Stations Laser levels GPS and RTK.
  • Microsoft Office Suite software (e.g. Excel Word Outlook etc.).


Special Requirement/Condition of Employment:

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the required qualifications our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:

  • Associates Degree in Civil Construction Environmental or Ecological Engineering Engineering Technology or Drafting and four (4) years professional experience in engineering work computer aided drafting GIS modeling surveying engineering design and/or professional involvement in aquatic environment restoration OR A Bachelors degree with major study Civil Construction Environmental or Ecological Engineering Engineering Technology or Drafting and three (3) years of professional experience in engineering work computer aided drafting GIS modeling surveying engineering design and/or professional involvement in aquatic environment restoration.
  • Five (5) years of experience involving engineering techniques in aquatic environments.
  • Additional relevant education such as certificates or trainings and/or work experience that pertains to habitat restoration fish passage fish screening civil engineering design drafting surveying construction inspection project management and permitting.
