Opportunity in the Civil / Transport Engineering sector supporting transport planning traffic operations and road corridor design for public and private infrastructure projects across Australia. This on-site internship places you in project teams delivering traffic impact assessments intersection design and traffic modelling work under practicing engineers.
Primary job title: Traffic Engineering Intern
Role & Responsibilities
- Support traffic engineers with data collection and on-site traffic surveys including video counts turning counts and speed/volume studies.
- Build and run traffic models and microsimulations (SIDRA VISSIM Synchro) to test intersection and corridor performance scenarios.
- Prepare drawings and CAD deliverables using AutoCAD and GIS datasets for design and reporting.
- Compile technical inputs and contribute to Traffic Impact Assessments safety reviews and compliance checks with Austroads guidance.
- Analyse traffic datasets in Excel/Python to produce tables charts and clear recommendations for senior engineers and clients.
- Assist with review of design options prepare concise report sections and support stakeholder engagement when required.
Skills & Qualifications
Must-Have
- Currently enrolled in a Civil Transport or Traffic Engineering degree (undergraduate or postgraduate) with course-based exposure to traffic/transport subjects.
- Practical familiarity with SIDRA VISSIM or Synchro and exposure to traffic modelling workflows.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD and ArcGIS or similar GIS tools for plan production and spatial analysis.
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel; able to manipulate datasets create pivot tables and visualise results.
- Right to work in Australia and available to be on-site for the internship duration.
Preferred
- Experience scripting or data processing with Python for traffic data automation.
- Familiarity with Austroads guides and Australian road design standards.
- Previous internship or project work in transport planning traffic assessments or road safety audits.
