Job Summary

South Shore Regional Centre for Education

The South Shore Regional Centre for Education (SSRCE) practices the culturally responsive pedagogy approach in providing an inclusive diverse equitable safe and healthy education that supports learning and success both personally and academically to the 59000 residents of Lunenburg and Queens Counties an area of 5250 square kilometres and a total of 23 schools.

School Bus Monitor Responsibilities:

- Assist the bus driver in supervising students to ensure a safe environment.

- Operate the outside of the bus lift when not accompanied by TA.

- Participate in securing the wheelchair safely. Usually the bus monitor will enter the bus after loading the child on the ramp and securing the door to assist the driver in finishing securing the wheelchair.

- Monitor the actions of the students on the bus to and from school.

- Assist the driver in unloading the wheelchair when not accompanied by TA. The bus monitor will be responsible for removing the rear straps and unbuckling the lap belt. The driver will finish removing all other straps.

- Fasten and remove seat belts for the walk on students.

- Load and unload children from the bus safely to their Teacher Assistants if the TAs are there waiting if not the driver will be responsible to keep the children on the bus until the TAs arrive while the bus monitor proceeds with wheelchair procedure.

- Familiar with bus evacuation procedures.

Qualifications / Experience:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • First Aid Training
  • Experience working with children / youth

The South Shore Regional Centre for Educationrequires allnewly hiredemployees to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record / Vulnerable SectorCheck and a Nova Scotia Child Abuse Register Check. We will accept checks completed within the last 3 months.

Regional Office based positions require travel and candidates may be required to provide a valid drivers license. Some school based positions also require travel and candidates may be required to provide a valid drivers license.
