As part of Eaters mission to build the worlds best restaurant recommendation platform our Dining team shapes restaurant coverage that helps readers decide where to eat and why it this role youll create engaging trustworthy stories that reflect Eaters voice and values. Youll hone your voice as a guide and tastemaker for Chicago demonstrating local authority while ensuring our work reaches audiences where they are and makes an impact.

All staffers at Eater work across Eaters umbrella of brands (Eater Punch Pre Shift Thrillist) on a variety of platforms (on-site social video newsletter the app and more) should be comfortable dining out for work and filing engaging and illuminating dining reports afterward. The audience editor should expect to pitch shoot and produce social video and be comfortable appearing on camera and supporting team members in appearing on camera. Additionally staffers are expected to represent Eater at industry events brand events and media and press opportunities.

WHAT YOULL DO

• Produce edit and distribute social video with enthusiasm and creativity.
• Identify develop sources and report on the dynamic Midwest food scene with a focus on Chicago.
• Write and edit clean and engaging copy for both Eaters website and social platforms with an understanding of how tone and visuals differ across platforms (Instagram Reels Facebook Threads TikTok BlueSky and others).
• Responsible for engaging with audiences across social media newsletters and Reddit including responding to comments fostering conversation and maintaining brand voice across platforms.
• Manage newsletter programs under the direction and strategy of Dining Editorial Manager including building newsletters in Sailthru and Substack adapting editorial content for newsletters basic analytical skills and inbox management.
• Willingness and ability to dine out for work-related research including outside of work hours.

WHO YOU ARE

• Plugged into the Chicago food scene with a knack for identifying engaging restaurant news stories and trends.
• Proficient in Photoshop to create visually engaging carousels and high-touch social media posts.
• Skilled in executing social video including confidence and poise appearing on camera.
• Familiar with audience-focused storytelling on a variety of platforms (Instagram TikTok Substack etc.).
• Comfortable with tastemaking which will be used to update and/or edit maps research and write dining reports etc.
• Able to break news and write insightful service-oriented features with accuracy about your regions dining scene is preferred. Youre as comfortable working with a PR rep as you are connecting with a mom-and-pop restaurant owner.
• Experience editing news and service coverage is a plus.
• You welcome feedback and adapt quickly to put ideas and edits into practice.
