Job Summary

Air Liquide is a world leader in gases technologies and services for industry and health. Present in 60 countries with 66 300 employees the Group serves more than 4 million customers and patients. Oxygen nitrogen and hydrogen are small molecules essential to life matter and energy. They embody Air Liquides scientific territory and have been at the heart of the Groups business since its creation in 1902.
Air Liquide places diversity at the heart of its activities and is committed in particular to promoting professional equality and the employment of workers with disabilities.
The Paris Innovation Campus (78 - Les Loges en Josas) is Air Liquides largest R&D center.
It develops innovative solutions for all of the Groups activities. More than 250 researchers work in 48 laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and experimental platforms enabling them to explore numerous research

How will you CONTRIBUTE and GROW

The operations research team of Air Liquide R&D works on diverse optimization and simulation methods to support decision-making on key operational and strategic business objectives.

This internship focuses on developing a decision support framework for strategic capital investment in industrial energy systems specifically addressing market volatility and future uncertainty for risk-averse decision-makers. An example application is optimizing electric boiler or heat storage sizing for an existing natural gas-fired cogeneration plant. The methods could be extended to hydrogen and oxygen production and storage integrated systems.

The main tasks are:

  • Formulate a two-stage robust optimization (2-stage RO) model to capture the investment decision (e-boiler / heat or power storage sizes) and subsequent operational decisions under price uncertainty.

  • Implement and solve the bilevel optimization problem exploring techniques such as the Column-and-Constraint Generation (C&CG) and compared to alternative decomposition methods.

  • Quantify the value of generating a cost-robustness Pareto front and comparing it with deterministic and stochastic optimization methods to provide clear actionable insights for decision-makers.

Are you a MATCH

  • Final year engineering student / Master 2 in computer science or applied mathematics.

  • Strong background in applied mathematics: optimization operations research and MILP modeling.

  • Good programming skills: Scientific Python (NumPy SciPy etc.) and OR modeling frameworks (e.g. Pyomo). Familiarity with robust optimization concepts and solvers (e.g. HiGHS Gurobi CPLEX) is a plus.

Additional Information

Air Liquide has been awarded the Happy Trainees label.

The internship will be carried out at Campus Innovation Paris Air Liquides R&D center in France located in Loges-en-Josas (1 Chemin de la Porte des Loges).

  • Geographical location: France / Ile de France / 78 - Les loges

  • Desired start date: Early 2026

  • Duration of the internship : 6 months
