Position Title: School District Attorney
Department: Aiken County Board of Education
Reports To: Aiken County Board of Education
FLSA Status: Exempt
SUMMARY:
To provide legal counsel and representation for the Board the Superintendent and the staff on School District matters.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Other duties may be assigned.
- Attends and provides legal advice at all meetings of the School Board and such other meetings as the Board or the superintendent may request.
- Advises the Board on all matters of a legal or technical nature relating to the interpretation of statutes charters ordinances contracts policies rules and regulations.
- Prepares and renders legal opinions upon request to the board (or any member thereof) the superintendent and the staff.
- Prepares and conducts litigation and administrative hearings as authorized by the Board
- Prepares all documents incident to the noticing calling and conducting of school referendum elections.
- Provides legal assistance in the drafting of legal documents rules and regulations resolutions applications and all other legal or quasi-legal papers upon request.
- Provides legal assistance in the drafting of State legislation proposed by the School District for presentation to the State Legislature.
- Maintains access to all legislation introduced in the State legislature and interprets the impact of such legislation on the interest of the School District.
- Participates in professional growth activities to maintain a current level of knowledge pertaining to school law issues.
- Performs such other duties consistent with his professional competence as the Board may from time to time assign.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises secretary.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- Duly licensed by the State of South Carolina to practice law.
- Specialized training and/or experience in school-law issues preferred.
- Established practice with progressively more responsible cases.

CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS:
Must be duly licensed by the State of South Carolina to practice law.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers regulatory agencies or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to administrators public groups/community and board of education.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and in the display and interpretation of assessment data. Ability to apply basic concepts of statistical analysis fractions percentages ratios and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Technology skills. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
