The Markets team at NESO takes responsibility for meeting the nations energy needs at the lowest cost while ensuring the power system maintains the highest levels of resilience and security and paving the way for the decarbonisation. These three complex and often conflicting drivers (the Energy Trilemma) require a specialised blend of technical and economic analysis to identify the right road forward for NESO and for the nation.
As a data scientist modelling and quantifying power system risks you will analyse operations data to grow our understanding of system behaviour in a changing world. You will use your conclusions to shape policy in the Electricity National Control Centre as well as NESOs strategy functions. Youll also educate inform advise and influence the wider industry.
This role can be based from Wokingham Warwick or Glasgow and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants as well as flexible working arrangements.

About the National Energy System Operator (NESO)
In Autumn of 2024 the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO) the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britains electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.
The ESO including all of its existing roles are now at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO we will build on our existing roles capabilities and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors including electricity natural gas and hydrogen and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.
The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors with complete operational independence from government the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As was the ESO NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable affordable and secure way for all.
Key Accountabilities
- Develop models to optimise and forecast frequency and energy security.
- Identify analyse and report on potential operability issues to NESO Senior Management Ofgem BEIS and other industry parties.
- Develop and communicate operational policy internally and externally.
- Design develop and maintain new or existing operational tools interfacing with key operational users or IT as required.
- Support market and codes development design and implementation.
- Represent ESO in collaboration with industry and academia.
- Maintain up to date knowledge of ongoing operability issues and opportunities.
About you

- Has solid experience of data analysis with the ability to develop models and tooling from scratch where needed. Experienced in at least one of MS Excel (including VBA) R Python or SQL.
- Strong communicator with excellent presentation and writing skills.
- Passionate about understanding the big picture and finding ways to improve.
- Ideally experienced in statistical modelling machine learning power system engineering or GB energy market arrangements.

What youll get
A competitive salary between 55000 - 70000pa dependent on experience and capability.
As well as your base salary you will receive a bonus based on company performance 26 days annual leave as standard and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
