The Radio Operator is responsible for maintaining and controlling all radio and communication systems on the offshore rig ensuring continuous and secure communication between the rig supply vessels helicopters and onshore support teams. The role plays a vital part in operational safety emergency coordination and regulatory compliance.
1. Communication Management
Operate and monitor VHF HF and satellite communication systems to support offshore operations.
Relay messages between rig personnel vessels helicopters and onshore control teams.
Maintain 24/7 readiness of all communication systems to ensure uninterrupted contact.
2. Safety & Emergency Coordination
Act as the primary communication point during emergencies (e.g. man overboard medical evacuation fire).
Coordinate with the Qatar Coast Guard support vessels and aviation teams during critical situations.
Conduct regular radio checks equipment tests and emergency communication drills.
3. Log Keeping & Reporting
Maintain accurate records of all incoming and outgoing transmissions in the radio logbook.
Prepare and submit daily communication activity reports.
Ensure all communication activities comply with maritime aviation and company regulations.
4. Equipment Maintenance
Perform basic troubleshooting and ensure optimal functioning of all radio and communication systems.
Report equipment faults or malfunctions to the electronics technician or maintenance team for repair.
Experience:
Minimum 2 years of experience as a Radio Operator (offshore or maritime environment preferred).
Strong understanding of GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) operations and protocols.
Certifications:
Valid BOSIET/FOET with HUET (mandatory for offshore Qatar).
Valid GMDSS Radio Operator License (required under international maritime regulations).
H2S Awareness and Basic Firefighting certification (preferred).
Skills:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English (Arabic proficiency is an advantage).
Strong multitasking ability attention to detail and composure during emergencies.
Technical knowledge of communication systems and radio equipment.
